It has been some time since I have either visited this forum or posted on it. I was very disheartened to read the most recent thread for the VLC forum, which has now been locked out so I cannot add this post there. There was so much bashing of VLC, it was hard to stomach.
I realize that I am one of those posters who showed up once and never came back, but I am not a VLC imposter. I really did take the course, and believe it or not, I have been successful in obtaining steady employment. If you have not seen any other posts from me, this is because I am someone working full time and do not have enough free time to be a regular contributor to the forums. I do visit periodically to read posts; I just have not felt the need to post until I read this thread.
A couple of things concerned me about this forum. First, if you all think so badly of VLC, why do you have a dedicated forum for VLC? Do you just want someone to pick on? If it is just because VLC is paying for advertising, it does not seem like a very good practice to allow such bashing of a client, including by a site moderator. I had visited this site before you established the VLC forum, and then when I discovered that you had set it up I was very pleased. Somehow, I felt that maybe others in the field were actually demonstrating an open mind to VLC and the people who attended it.
Second, why such brutal discrimination of people based on what school they attend(ed), anyway? I have always believed that higher education is a lofty goal in itself, no matter where you get it. I also believe that a poor student at a highly regarded school should not be considered better than a top student at a poor school (and I am by no means saying that VLC is a poor school.) This is what tests are for. I personally would not hire someone based on the school they came from. Yes, I would want to see some demonstration of an interest in learning and relevant education, but I would also want some kind of proof that they can do the job. As someone who has supervised individuals from various levels of education, I have had employees from top-notch universities who looked great on paper but were book-stupid. I do not see myself in any better or worse light than someone who took their course somewhere else, and I would certainly appreciate the same treatment from other MTs.
Now, when it comes to giving recommendations about schools to attend, I know there is an industry bias to certain schools. But, I have to say that I have only come across this on chat boards (not just this one) and not during my job hunt. I realize that we cannot always know all the reasons why we are either successful or unsuccessful in getting a job, but I truly have never had any comment made to me about the course I took.
When prospective students browse various chat sites for some assistance in selecting a school, it seems natural that alumni are going to push their own school a little. That is fine, just do not let it get so personal and denegrade others for the choices they make. Every school has its positives and negatives. The best students are the ones who can get the best out of what is provided and use that as a foundation to continue the learning adventure (because we all know how much there is to learn in this field.) Furthermore, I think it needs to be pointed out that each employer seems to have its own peculiarities that no course could ever hope to encapsulate, meaning that learning on the job is required for sure.
Anyway, to wrap this up, I thought that forums like this were set up so that other could read about the positives and negatives of the various schools. Instead I find that there are personal attacks and judgments made on students of an institution that is producing fine graduates. I went on far too long, but this needed to be said...got to get back to work.

The most recent thread (to which you refer ) was locked up eight months ago!
If anyone could be accused of being catty in this current year, dear, I think it would have to be you.

Yet, you found time on Memorial Day to come and post about a thread that (as tropsicle pointed out) originated back in January?
Since the issues you raise are familiar to all of us here and have been addressed ad nauseum in different mannerisms, I'm going to go ahead and lock this one too. It's called "beating a dead horse..." and it gets old.
Wishing you the best of luck in your transcription career!
