Hello everyone,

I am a soon-to-be MT student. At the risk of sounding like I'm about to beat a dead horse, I have a question with respect to school.

I am Canadian and reside in Ontario, Canada. I have been researching the MT field and more specifically MT schools since December. Being Canadian my natural inclination was to enroll with CanScribe. However, after reviewing the curriculum of CanScribe, M-TEC and Andrews, I am continually drawn to M-TEC. My question is:

In your experience, is it more challenging for a Canadian, living in Canada, without recent experience in the health profession to find employment after attending an American online school? (While my more recent career was in various managerial positions within the corporate world, prior to that I was an ophthalmic technician. None of which relates to MT.)

Before you advise me to search this site and M-TEC, I assure you I have done that already. From what I can tell, most replies are either from individuals who are Canadian & living in the US, or are still in school and not yet looking for job placement. I also found a few replies from a small handful of people who admit that while the education at M-TEC was phenomenal, employment prospects were limited due to being in Canada. (One individual mentioned that one company said they preferred to hire a graduate from a Canadian school first.)

Going with the school with the best curriculum may seem like the most obvious choice. But being armed with an awesome education isn't always enough when it comes to employment.

Many thanks for your insight.

I am a Canadian (also residing in Ontario) and graduated from M-TEC. The education is top notch, no question, but you will encounter a few obstacles if you decide to work for a Canadian company as some (in my case MOST) of the recruiters at the bigger companies in Canada have not heard of M-TEC. Having said that, there are still many companies in the USA that will hire Canadians. You will most definitely find a job but just know that the pool of companies that you will be able to apply to will be smaller than your fellow American "classmates."

If you have any other questions, please feel free to send me a private message.

Hi tlchello,

Thank you very much for your reply. I appreciate it. The information you provided is helpful.

I find it remarkable that those recruiting/hiring for Canadian companies that provide MT services have never heard of one of the more reputable schools. One would think they'd be aware of most if not all of the schools available - good or bad, but perhaps that's just my own mindset. (IMO, there's so much information on the web regarding M-TEC that it's hard to miss.)

Having a smaller pool of companies to apply to isn't necessarily discouraging to me. Although a few other MT's have mentioned in other forums that the American companies willing to hire Canadians is on the decline - noone seemed to know why. Has anyone else found that to be the case?

I can give you a possible reason for this. Because of tax issues, American companies often prefer to hire Canadians on an independent contractor status. However, the rules as to what constitutes a true IC status seem to be enforced more and more stringently. Many companies that have considered their transcriptionists ICs are now converting at least some of them to employee status, lest they run afoul of the law. With required turnaround times for reports dropping all the time, MTSOs need greater control over their transcriptionists' work schedules - and that means employee status, not IC. I can't speak for any other company, but that is definitely what we are facing.

Hi Valentina,

I am an M-TEC grad, a Canadian, and work for one of the larger Canadian companies as well as a smaller one. I also have 2 MT friends who have done the same. We have never had a problem finding jobs. Most of the larger MT companies in Canada are much more knowledgeable about M-TEC than they were in the past. The smaller MT company I work for now is only interested in M-TEC and Andrews grads. We recently hired an M-TEC grad. The other schools don't seem to cut it for what we require. Don't let the fear of a non-Canadian school keep you from making the right decision. It must be M-TEC or Andrews.

Good luck!

Jiffer

Edited to add that I live in Ontario as well. My 2 M-TEC MT friends also live in Ontario.

Hey Jiffer,

I would love to ask you something put am not able to PM you. I know we have "talked" before but I can't remember if it was via email or PMs. Is there some way to contact you? Send me a PM if there is.
Thanks.
T.

I just received a response to an email I sent to one of the larger Canadian MT companies. I am not training with M-TEC or Andrews :( so I wanted to find out what my options would look like.

Neither MTEC nor Andrews was mentioned - 2 other Canadian-based courses were, however. What this company is looking for is (preferably) experienced MTs. Barring that, the main criteria when hiring new graduates is whether they participated in a practicum after their studies, and if they graduated with high honours or honours.

I know experienced MTs don't approve of unpaid or low paid internships, and for good reason. Since my school offers a low paid internship, it may be better to stick with them and go that route rather than cut my losses and try M-TEC or Andrews - an option I still haven't ruled out.

Some days I think I can swing it - there are hundreds of dictation minutes and I'm getting a lot of practice. But other days...

Jiffer did you get your job as a new grad? Did they ask about an internship? Or did you just ace the tests? Do you think your M-TEC education helped you start at a better rate?

More thoughts:
I figure my options are either to work locally or to work for a Canadian MTSO. From what I understand, there are not a lot of IC positions available. Some/most employment benefits with an American company are of no value to me (e.g. medical, retirement), nor are US MTSOs particularly interested in hiring Canadian employees.

Any Canadians out there have some helpful advice?

Just wondering wat the 2 Canadian based schools they mentioned?

Thanks! I'm in Alberta and just narrowing the schools down. M-Tec and Canscribe.

Canscribe and SelScribe. I haven't heard of SelScribe but if you go on CanadianMT - hopefully you can sign up with the link below - there's good information.
