U. S. military embraces Dragon NaturallySpeaking
Nuance Communications, Inc. a leading supplier of speech solutions, today announced that its Dictaphone Healthcare division's Dragon NaturallySpeaking Medical software has achieved 100 percent growth in adoption within the U.S. Military Health System over the past year. Dragon Medical is currently used by more than 6,000 U.S. clinicians from healthcare treatment facilities representing all branches of the military, including the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.
Dragon Medical has extended its value into the Federal government through its seamless integration with AHLTA, the military's electronic health record, to enable clinical documentation through accurate voice-to-text speech recognition. According to a survey performed across 17 distinct Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps medical treatment facilities, 79.9 percent of those surveyed chose Dragon Medical as their preferred method for documenting care within AHLTA.

Dragon Shmagon - maybe we should refer the US Military and our dear dolt of a president to our "Things that make you snicker.." forum. Let's see how Dragon handles those little gems!

The difference between Dragon and the examples you refer to is the difference between apples and oranges. Dragon is a front-end SR technology, meaning the dictator actually sees the text being created in real time, and has the opportunity (and hopefully, the requirement) to edit and correct in real time. The SRT applications being used in large hospital settings are by and large back-end systems; the doctors are told they "don't have to change anything" about how they dictate (if they're even told about SRT at all) and the dictators do not interface with the technology in any significant way. All the speech recognition is done "on the back end" using recorded voice files, not in real time, and the dictators usually have no clue how much editing may need to be done in order for their dictation to resemble anything close to an accurate encounter report.
As someone who has used Dragon, it's actually pretty cool. Not perfect, by any means, but if you use it like it's supposed to be used, it can save a lot of keyboarding.

I laughed about how Nuance, in wanting to bolster their claim to 100% infiltration, twice mentions Marine healthcare facilities.
The US Marines do not now and have never had their own medical branch. They are considered part of the US Navy, who provides all health and dental care.
Perhaps that is just a nuance to them...

I noticed the key word "growth". What it comes down to once you've filtered the marketing-speak is that they've doubled their previous users. Not 100% infiltration, not 100% usage, just 100% growth.
