I'm getting ready to grduate and apply for jobs. What do you usually include on a resume? I'm used to listing your previous jobs and education, but that doesn't really say anything about my training unless they know about the school I attended. How do MT resumes differ your typical job resume?

If you are an MTEC student, your instructor has a wealth of information regarding resumes that she will share with you. You will receive it from her once you send in your Pre-Employment Exam (the final). My instructor gave me a lot of suggestions and really helped me fine tune my CV to make it the best and most relevant document possible.

No different from any other entry-level resume.

All I can say is please PLEASE leave off all the WAH and Mommy stuff. It is simply unprofessional and really - no employer cares.

People really put that on their resumes? It's sure not relevant to the job!

What's CV? Unfortunately I don't go to MTec but I'm sure my school's grad board has some resume stuff. It just sucks that I have to wait until I'm a graduate to look at it.

As for the "mommy stuff," I guess some resumes do have a spot for interests and that type of personal stuff but I've always kept mine strictly business. Leave that stuff for the interview or something.

The only thing I felt the need to do was explain my absence from the workforce for 7 years. Though they usually know. I gave them two words: Family leave.

Hmmm....only one school I know of that has a grad board you can't get to until you graduate....

See you soon!

I wouldn't even bring it up in an interview unless it's relevant. Your personal life shouldn't be any of their business. I always thought that when potential employers ask you questions like how many children you have, etc., it is a way of weeding people out. Some places would rather hire someone without children or without young children, so they can't be used as an excuse as to why you can't work for whatever reason.

Also...

CV = Curriculum vitæ (Latin for "course of life"), also known as a Résumé; a summary of academic and professional history and achievements.

Straight from wiki.

If anyone asked me how many kids I had, my answer would be, "Who wants to know?" My lawyer maybe, because that question happens to be illegal.

I'm taking M-TEC's course, and you don't have access to the grad board and career center until graduation. You do, however, have access to more areas of the main forum than the general public, plus the classes.

Okay, yes. Guess I should have said, "only other school...," since the OP said she didn't go to M-TEC.

Baldymom, I always thought that "do you have kids?" question was illegal, too. Boy, was I surprised to hear this story on the news the other night. Turns out the legal status of that question, like so many other things, all depends on where you live. I'm guessing that a combative answer like "Who wants to know?", with or without kids, might encourage the employer to keep looking for someone with a "better attitude", but I could be wrong (see above - she smiles).

Interesting! I thought it was a federal thing. I also thought it was illegal to even asked if you are married. I may have to look into it a bit.

Of course, as long as we're transcriptionists working from home, these days, most will just assume you have kids, since that's the demographic the job is being sold to.

SAHM - WILL WORK IN JAMMIES... (no hate mail please, I'm a sahm too)
