I'm going to be starting a new job soon and they use Shorthand. I am currently just using autocorrect and had a couple questions. I'm sure just getting the software when I get the computer and playing with it would answer my questions, but in the meantime want to go through my list and make changes now if necessary.

Can the short or keyword or whatever it is called have spaces in it? One of the things I sometimes do is have a space for different endings, like ha = headache, but cannot use has for headaches because has is a word, so after I type ha and it expands to headache I then put a space and the s and it changes from headache s to headaches. Another example is tol = tolerate, tols = tolerates, but I can't have told so I have tolerate d = tolerated. Can I keep this system in Shorthand?

Also, will shorthand do formatted entries, so typing CO2 will actually change it add the subscript for me?

What about individual keys? I currently use the ^ (shift 6) and it changes to the word degrees. Will that work in Shorthand?

I also understands it has the box that shows you what different choices are. I am going to try to get used to it, but may not be able to. I have very sensitive eyes (I have Adie syndrome which I'm not sure if that is what makes them so sensitive), so a lot of extra movement gives me a terrible headache. I can't even stand to use the windshield wipers in the car when I'm driving. Anyway, if I can't get used to the box with the choices, can it be turned off? Like I said, I'm going to try it first since I know how helpful it is supposed to be, but just wanted to know.

The last question I have is for when you do templates, will Shorthand let you use the field codes to jump to?

I think that is it. Thanks in advance for any information.

No, you can't have spaces - but you can take advantage of how SH uses punctuation and add a keyword like ;s to produce an s, so you would type ha;s to produce headaches.

Well, kind of. Shorthand will simulate keyboard commands as well as simple typing, so what you would need to do is insert the appropriate commands for the sub/superscript into your entry. For example, {@key Ctrl+B} is the Shorthand command that would be used to turn on bolding in Word.

Yes, you can do that without a problem - although I personally think a keyword like "dgs" would be faster. \:\) I generally reserve those characters for shortcut assignments in Shorthand - for those times you want a custom keystroke command instead of a keyword. (For example, I have a descriptive keyword called outloop that opens a new email in Outlook, inserts a particular set of addresses, adds a subject line, and some other canned text that I select from a list. Rather than typing the keyword, I press my assigned keyboard shortcut to run this entry.)

Yes.

As far as I know, but I don't use Word's field codes very often anymore, so maybe someone with more experience can answer this one.

There is a Shorthand forum here:
http://www.productivitytalk.com/forums/index.php

that I think you will find very helpful. Browse through the site too, there is a LOT of information there!

Thanks so much for the information. I am not always the most patient person in the world and want to get started on tweaking my lists already and I don't even have the computer yet, and this information is already a big help.

Thank you again.

Also, I'll read more at productivity talk when I get some time. I actually did look there first and since I don't have the software yet, did not really understand some of the questions.

Again, thank you both.

I have a Shorthand "cheat sheet" I could probably send you as an attachment. What platform will you be using it on?

Fostermama, I was going to send you a PM, but you're not accepting them.

If by any chance you're referring to a cheat sheet created by someone at your company, I'm not sure the person who created it intended it for general public distribution.

Obviously, if it's your own creation, then never mind. \:\)

Actually it is my own creation/compilation gleaned from PT and Saving Keystrokes, etc., but I'm sure AnnMT can find the same information on PT.

That would be great. I'm not sure what the platform is yet, I think it is called Enterprise, with Webmedx. I tried to send you a PM with my email address, but it would not go.

My bad. I have gone and made myself the middle man. From this forum and Productivity Talk, Endiqua, 14Tonks, and Harrie on PT are an absolute wealth of Shorthand tips, among many other things. Their expertise far exceeds my own. They are very generous and patient with their help, they will walk you through step-by-step.

There are numerous other people on this forum who will be glad to help, the ones I mentioned are just the ones I have had "personal" experience with.

My cheat sheet is mainly dibs and dabs I have picked up here and there that I find useful, but which might not be of any use to you at all, plus you didn't mention if you were doing Speech Rec, which I have not had the joy of experiencing yet!

I sometimes get a little gung ho when offering help, guess it is one of my character defects.

I was pretty clumsy with Shorthand when I first started out, but it is well worth the extra effort you put into it - it will dramatically increase your production! Can't stress that enough.
