Heparin contaminated on purpose

Quote:
America's drugs watchdog believes that Chinese-made ingredients for a blood-thinning drug may have been deliberately contaminated.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said earlier that a chemical contaminant had been found in some batches of the drug heparin.

It has linked the contaminant to hundreds of severe allergic reactions and dozens of deaths across the US.

An FDA director said when and how the toxin had been introduced was unclear.

"FDA's working hypothesis is that this was intentional contamination, but this is not yet proven," Director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research Janet Woodcock told a congressional

It really annoys me that the title for this intimates that it was done on purpose when the article clearly says that has not been proven yet ... nothing like a juicy headline to get folks riled before they even read the article.

I finally found the ABC News story I heard the other day that touches on this subject. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory?id=4698857

Apparently, the FDA can't keep up with inspections of foreign drug manufacturing plants that supply the raw ingredients for drugs the agency has approved for sale in the US. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the reason we aren't supposed to buy Canadian drugs because the FDA can't vouch for their safety? It doesn't appear that they can really vouch for the safety of approved US drugs compounded with foreign-made components either. If both could kill me because somebody made a "boo-boo" that wasn't caught, I think I'd prefer to buy the "blue light special" to paying full price.

I'm also surprised that the misleading headline came from the BBC. A former English coworker never missed an opportunity to tell me how superior the BBC World News is to any American network's news programming.
