I got a bizarre letter from Tenet corp Friday telling me that oops, we actually paid you $5000 more than you thought we did in 2006.
The letter goes on to state that I "may wish" to seek outside tax advice.......local IRS office "may" also be able to assist you.
I always give a once-over to my pay stubs when I get them, and I think I would have notice 5K missing. I went back through my pay stubs from 2006, and at first glance they all look correct.
I no longer work for them -- I now work for a nonprofit hospital.
I'm just flabbergasted, and will be calling my tax lady to get her advice.
Holy crap.

But ... if they paid you $5K more ... you would not have noticed something missing, would you? Wouldn't you have thought you got a raise or a bonus or something? or am I totally misunderstanding what you meant?

I filed taxes on $45,600 in 2006. That is the amount my pay stubs showed at the end of the year total, and that was the amount on my W2.
I was satisfied at that time that the number was correct, as each payday I checked my stub and it seemed correct as I went along during the year.
I got a letter stating that the total I earned that year was 50,600 and that was the corrected number and I should get advice from my tax preparer, IRS or local payroll dept.
I know that if I had really made an extra $5000 like they say I did, that I would have missed having that money in hand at the time. Since I didn't make, or get paid for it, I didn't miss it.
I called the local payroll department at the hospital where I worked. The clerk there said that I was not the only one who got the letter, but that she couldn't tell me anything at this point, that they were going to have a meeting with the comptroller and would get back to me.
$5000 is too large of a chunk of money for me to have missed getting. I don't believe that I received an "extra" $5000 and I think (at this point) that they are up to something funny (and I don't mean funny ha ha.)
So they're not willing to GIVE me the $5000 they say I was not paid. They say I have already received it in 2006 (even though it did not show up on my pay stubs) and need to adjust my taxes accordingly and file an amended return. Bull pucky. I

Hospitals and hospital systems are notorious for accounting errors. Tenet in particular is notorious for them. It doesn't mean they're cooking the books, it means they don't know what they're doing.
This is why my husband always keeps his pay stubs throughout the year, then when we file taxes we shred all but the last stub and keep it with the tax records. And mind you - he's the controller at a hospital himself!
