I just need to know a couple things.
1.(And this may sound quite ignorant to you experienced Mts) But the 3rd shift is working from 11:00pm to 3:00am. Would this be considered 'part time'? As this is not 8 hrs. Like in 1st shift? Would you earn more since this is not a very favorite shift?
2.Are all on-line tests timed?
Thanks.

1. A. Anything less than 37-40 hours a week is usually considered part-time, yes. B. Regarding earning more - it depends. Some companies do pay more, some don't.
2. No idea.

1. Unless it's a split shift, I would say it's part-time, too. Of course, they would have told you if it was a split-shift. Where I work, I get 0.05 cpl night-shift differential. I'm an employee.
2. I took a ton of tests before choosing a job and I did run onto a few untimed ones. Some timed ones I took timed the written portion of the test but I had as long as I needed for the transcription portion. Other ones timed the written portion and then gave me 2 hours to do 2-4 dictations.

I graduated 18 months ago then moved from a large city to a desolate area. I'm having a hard time getting hired. Most say I need at least 2 years experience but, how am I to get that experience? Any one else having this problem? I'm afraid by the time I finally get 'discovered', I may need to take the course all over again. All advice is welcomed.

Busy, you need to talk to your school about job placement. Also, as for taking the course over, I hope you aren't thinking about taking the SAME course over! If they couldn't prepare you for a job the first time, they sure won't be able to the second time around.

The usual advice in your situation is to try to find an in-house acute care job, or if none are available, to look for a small local MTSO who will mentor; failing that, to look for an on-site office job. It sounds like geographically none of those may be easy for you to find. In that case, you can just keep applying any place that will let you apply and hope to finally get lucky, or you can consider taking a course from one of the schools for which many companies will waive the 2-year experience requirement. (M-Tec or Andrews are how you get a decent entry-level job fast with no experience.) You are correct that the farther you get from graduation without working, the harder it becomes to find work.

Maybe it's just me, but I sometimes wish that at least some of these companies would just come right out and say, "Sorry, we don't hire graduates of [insert name] school unless they have experience." It would be too late for the people applying, but at least it would help eventually get the word out that some schools prepare you to work at home on your own, and other schools don't.

Thank you nite and 14, I was really afraid of that. In my area jobs are non-existant I would have to rely on finding something online. I took a 2 year at home course through PCDI, now Ashworth University. When I called Ashworth for help/advice, they referred me to mtdesk and mtdaily. I guess job placement is out of the question here. You are right far..they should tell you up front but they won't otherwise they won't get your money! I feel as if I wasted 2 years of not only my life but my husband and kids' lives (they put up with so much during my 2 year period)...not to mention the fee. Living where I do now, it would probably be a waste of my time and money to even try to pursue it further...bummer is...I really enjoy this kind of work.

They refer their students here to find a job? Oh, that's just priceless. They won't refer them here before someone signs up to their course, but they send them over when they are done with them and the money's in the bank.

Yes meri, that is exactly how I'm left feeling. the school I trained through was bought out just a couple of months after I graduated ...I guess the new school isn't contractually bound. Although, they were friendly.

Hey Busy, you and I are in the same boat. I just graduated, however I am working for peanuts for a small company that hired me out of school. I like it, but I need to make more money. All of the good places want anywhere from 2 years up to 8 years experience. My husband let me take off for 10 months to go to school thinking that I was going to be making all of this money and now we are in severe debt. It sucks doesn't it? I tried different hospitals around here and nobody looks at me because of the loser school I went to. It's a long story, but I got suckered and I didn't read between the lines. My school is not accredited (which I didn't know until recently) and the tuition was still $13,000.
You are not alone. However, my advice to you is take whatever you can get right now, even if it is answering phones at a doctors office. The gaps in the resume look really bad, which has hurt me too I am sure.

That's it. I'm going to quit messing around and just start my own religion. With a good website and PayPal, I can obviously make a fine living without even promising my converts anything. Not like most people bother to research what their money's buying them anyway.
As for PCDI, now that they're calling themselves a "university," does that mean they've moved out of the closet in the high school cafeteria and into new digs in a strip mall? Do they still include 18 "lessons" and a cassette player, or have they gotten all fancy and moved on to email communication?
Criminy.

Busy Bee and Lara,
Before you throw in the towel, you could try sending your resumes to: 1. Medquist. 2. Outsourcing solutions. 3. Deventure. 4. Millennium Business Services. 5. Possibly Focus Infomatics.
Some of these companies have hired/do hire newbies on occasion.
If you still get nowhere and are still interested in MT, people who complete courses with M-Tec and Andrews have a very high rate of hire right out of those schools.
Lara you were gouged, and seriously, at $13,000.
Give the above companies a shot, you have absolutely nothing to lose, and who knows?
Best to you both.

Thanks Whorn, I will try them. Very much appreciated, you have no idea how much.
Regarding the $13,000, I have been told many times before that I am extremely book smart and very accurate and you can trust me with anything, but I don't have a lick of common sense. You would think that as much research as I do on drugs and body parts that the doctor mumbles, I should have researched schools a little better. I guess being 37 years old now, my parents finally proved their point. I did learn alot, I mean it, but all that knowledge is useless when you can't apply it.
I am going to keep plugging away and probably pick up a part time job waiting tables or something just to make ends meet until this pans out. I have a feeling it will, but I am just a bit uneasy right now.
