I've had this problem for a few years now, though it is now only becoming a major issue with me seeing as I just bought another new hard drive. Warmer weather here has my brand new "Western Digital Cool Run" drive so noisy and throwing out so much heat at the moment. I've de-dusted the heat sink, the fans, and the vents, even bought a new case fan yesterday - it worked great yesterday, today though it seems to have lost its power. Fan had a 1 day life. Unreal.

It's only spring and already the heat is becoming an issue inside the case/under this desk. So here I sit with the case totally off and my machine pulled out from underneath my desk (2-1/2 x 2-1/2 ft empty space - no vents or fans are ever blocked), machine tilted against my desk so the ceiling fan can help cool it down and quiet it. Ceiling fan is working its magic again, the drive is quiet and a bit cooler, but this is not an ideal solution, it's just a temporary Band-Aid.

I want to know if overheating/drive noisy and very hot is an issue for anyone else and what you have done to resolve this please. Will upgrading my 300W power supply to a higher one help any?

I really am not looking forward to freezing myself with the a/c and ceiling fan again all summer long just so my computer can remain cool.

I just bought 2 Evercool Sonic hard drive fans online, which attach directly to the drives and supposedly will keep them cool. Hope it works.

Here's what I'm dealing with -
XP, P4, 2.8GHz, 2GB RAM, 300GB master (272GB free), 200GB slave (not mounted next to eachother), 300W power supply, 3 internal fans - 1 exhaust, 2 intake. Lots of room inside the case. Mind you, slave runs warm, the master drive is on fire. Heat sink is not hot at all. Anyhow, can't replace my heat sink separately as it's mounted directly on the motherboard.

ETA - The power supply is cool to the touch and expelling a decent amount of warm air. Memory cards are cool-warm.

Thanks for any advice.

Just an update -

Problem finally solved!

Let's see...after buying a new hard drive, upgrading my power supply to 630W, installing 3 extra fans, adding another GB RAM, replacing faulty CD-ROM drive, spending a small fortune, none of the above were the answer to my problem.

In a fit of frustration one night last week, I decided to remove (break actually) the plastic bracket that mounts the heat sink to my motherboard. Voila! Problem revealed finally. The heat sink separated from my CPU.

It turns out that all I needed was a $3.99 syringe of thermal adhesive to re-attach my heat sink to my CPU. Since I re-glued them and mounted in makeshift bracket, my machine has been perfect. The overheating and sudden shutting down has stopped completely.

This will be the first thing I check the next time I run across a problem before spending a small fortune on parts.

Thanks to everyone who read, but couldn't come up with a solution.

LOL! It's always the dumb little things that will get you. I say you ought to be careful with all that vacuuming, though--sometimes it's the dirt that's holding things together.
