I'm using Magic Vortex at $9.95/mo right now to transfer files that I have re-recorded from a tape to a digital file. Yes, I have a doctor who is STILL using tapes. I'm working on him. ;) I can send up to 100,000 KB at a time. The trouble is it is so incredibly slow and just takes forever. Is there a faster way? I have no idea how or what "zipping a file" is, but it sounds like it makes a file smaller. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!!

What is your internet connection speed? If you are on dial-up, moving any sizable number of voice files is going to take quite a while no matter what you do. If your connection speed is fast broadband but things are dragging at Magic Vortex, that may be a matter of overloaded servers or insufficient bandwidth for their servers. The only cure for that would be a different file transfer method.
"Zipping a file" means packaging it with software that compresses files and combines one of more into a single file. Zip is perhaps the most popular protocol for doing that, but there are others. There are a number of freeware tools available for zipping/unzipping files (7-Zip is a nice open source one), and recent versions of Windows include a very basic zip tool in My Computer/Windows Explorer. Enter zip in Windows Help for instructions. How much compression you get depends on the type of files you are zipping. In no case will you get so much compression that it will make a slow connection unnoticeable. You will have somewhat smaller files, which means a somewhat shorter transfer time, but big voice files will still take quite a while to transfer over slow connections.

I have DSL, so no problem there. I really hadn't thought about it being Magic Vortex's fault with overloaded servers. That could very well be it because it seems like in the last couple of weeks the files are just dragging along. I will definitely check that out.
Thanks for the info on zipping files. That sounds like it won't help much. I think I'll try a different FTP site and see if it's faster, then I'll know. Thanks for the ideas!
