How are you celebrating? Are you planting something? hanging your laundry out to dry? changing your light bulbs? marching in protest? or maybe just dressing for the occasion?

I've heard of camoflage, but this is ridiculous! Think I'll stick to working on my yard.

It's springtime! Gorgeous outside today - I don't need an excuse to get outside to start planting the annuals - any excuse to get away from the PC is a good one. \:\)

You've got that right! We New Yorkers don't see the sun too often, so we take advantage of it when we can.

I was going to plant a tree today but am afraid with the snow we have been having it will die, so I'm taking a rain check for a real spring day. It was funny this weekend, cherry/pear tree blossoms and snow on the ground. There goes my fruit crop this year probably. Dang, and we were going to have a good one too. Oh well, next year it will be better...the farmer's pledge.

I'm taking the dogs to the park for a hike and a cold swim in the lake for the Lab.

Well, in honor of Earth Day I took the dogs to the park like I said and then Kya (Yellow Lab, what color is yours?) had to come home and get an outside in the cold bath because she rolled in deer poop.

A. Lot. Of. It.

It was even caked in her collar. ~sigh~

So while Luther, the border collie, was howling and jumping at the window feeling left out, Kya and I were getting soaked in 40-degree weather trying to get the poop out.

And Happy Earth Day to you too.

I planted a herb garden at the weekend, but have done nothing outside the past 2 days because of thunderstorms, torrential rain, and tornado watches. I usually save my Earth Day until Mother's Day, when I always get either a miniature fruit tree or some other kind of plant for the yard.

Oh deer! (Sorry, I couldn't resist.) Mine is a black lab - 2 year old male named Riley. He had an encounter with a goose who apparently doesn't appreciate dogs and isn't in the Earth Day spirit!

We planted a small garden with annuals and tomatoes by the apple tree. The tomatoes froze the next day due to an out of the blue night freeze (2oº) down from 95º the day before. I was starting to get ready for summer weather. We gave the two dogs extra treats since walks by the forest is an everyday event. We see wildlife on a daily basis (coyotes, deer, bobcats, rabbits, blue jays, and eagles. The seven-foot bear is about ready to come out of hibernation for this year.
I am looking into some programs to do more for wildlife. Sure would be great to see the seals down at the beach, well maybe next year. Hopefully, I will be able to take a branch from my own lilac tree to this years festival.

Hello Kimi,

I read your Earth day story, it sounds like something my dog would do. I have taken a picture of our deer in the front yard here in California. I was thinking of going for a hike this weekend to see the coyotes. I do understand that some of the other women in this area are not comfortable with a forest walk and want a dog park built, doesn't it defeat the purpose of having all this open space to walk dogs in? I will stay out of the politics in this area. I also have watched five generations of squirrels run up the pinetrees in my front yard, which is fun for me. I don't let the dogs get to close since they may have diseases.

The harsh part of living at a 6,000 foot elevation are that medical facilities are an hour away, we live by the San Andreas Fault hearing the fault sounds (truck-like noise but I love geology), and a continual preparing for forest fire evacuations.
I will be taking the CERT class to help new people understand the procedures if they want to live here. My long range plan is to move to the Teton area in Wyoming if necessary. The Oregon area looks too expensive.
I would like to find information if you have any on the Oregon trail since part of it is documented through this area by Mt. Pinos. Do you have any resourses about the Oregon trail?

We just celebrated the travels of Lewis and Clark last year and Corvallis had its 150th anniversary.

On PBS there was a great documentary all about the Trail. Check this link out: http://www.isu.edu/~trinmich/Oregontrail.html

There are less expensive places in Oregon. Right up the road it much cheaper than here in town (probably because of OSU) so don't count us out, but I am sure Wyoming is cheaper...at least for now. Aren't they drilling for what, silver, copper??? I hear the economy is picking up over there.

Kimi,

I will check out this trail site, looks great. I will not count Oregon out then. Thank you. I do need to keep the Tetons in mind since I have a promise to keep to my Grandfather, he had some fossils to show me. I have not heard anything about the silver, copper, so I will put this on my list to research.
I will be starting my CERT class starting tomorrow. They have a patient documentation section which relates to MT work. If a fire does touch the Los Padres Forest, I will post information on the Los Padres Association page.
Thank you for your connection, I will check MT desk on Monday since this is my favorite site, and I hope to keep in touch.
