I probably drive a total of, oh let's say with taking the dogs to the park M-F, going to band x2 a week and grocery shopping and various errands, maybe 50 miles a week (it is good working from home!) so the gas price as far as my 1976 Volvo Station wagon is concerned is not a problem (I won't go into heat prices). Here in Central Oregon, home of the College Baseball World Champions gas is $3.39!!
How much is it where you live?
We want to take a vacation this summer but some friends were going to fly up here and their tickets for two adults were over $900 and that seems high, especially when it is just from California and I just flew home to Ohio during the Christmas rush for $350.

In my village, it's currently $3.59, but not too far away from us, maybe about 10 miles, it's up to $3.73 (both prices for regular).
I just bought a gallon of milk at the Piggly Wiggly this morning and it was $3.49...never thought I'd see the day when gas cost more than milk.
Oh how I long for the days of having my 3-cylinder Chevy Sprint that averaged 48 mpg (this was waaay before kids)...but, can't exactly fit 2 adults, 3 children, and a dog in a Chevy Sprint, so I suppose I'll stick with my Ford Windstar minivan that gets 25 mpg.

I've got you all beat. Here in Oakland, it's $3.95 for regular and well over $4 for premiums. Thankfully, I only fill up about once a month.

It was $3.12 at a couple of places in Yorktown, VA, yesterday, but north of the bridge it is a minimum of $3.25.

It looks like I need to plan a vacation to the Great State of Virginia and visit some Civil War battlefields as that is where the low gas is. Hey, I wonder if it is so low because of all the politicians living around there and they are giving themselves a break.
My bad.

Just to put things in perspective and so all those SUV drivers out there can feel a bit more justified, the US has below weighted average gas prices compared to the rest of the world. Europeans have consistently paid a LOT more for gas than we have, and this has been true for decades.
Worldwide Gas Prices
As you can see from the list, maps, and charts available there, the US pays approx $0.77 per liter, with the weighted average at $1.00. Of 141 countries listed, the US is at #77.
While I absolutely hate the sickening salaries and bonuses paid to the executives of Big Oil corporations that are making ever-increasing profits, expecting that aspect of this complex formula to change i9s a pipe dream. This is a capitalistic democracy, after all.
Rather, to seriously effect change, drive less, drive a vehicle with better gas mileage, walk more, and use less energy in general. Otherwise, we really have nothing to complain about.

Well, I just paid $3.70 a gallon.
While car travel can be modified to an extent, one thing that is really hurting people in this area is the cost of fuel oil, propane, and natural gas. Right now, I'm paying 50 cents a gallon more for propane than I did last year. <sigh> But, you can't live through the winter without heat.

It is also difficult for some us that live in rural America. I am 35 miles from the nearest gas station, grocery store, doctor, church, farm store, plumber, cafe, etc. We try to combine all trips and make extensive lists, as we can't afford to jump in the pickup (1993 Nissan, 22 mpg) to get that gallon of milk or bag of bolts. It is amazing the services available to us at our little town of 1800 people, and I am thankful for the businesses there. If we need to go to the nearest "big" town of 40,000 or so, it is 150 miles each way. The fuel prices have impacted our life in a very big way, as we also farm. Should we go back to draft horses?!

Too much poop.
You could try bikes, but I've seen bike road rage and it isn't pretty.
My parents, who are in their 70s, live 20 miles from town and live on a budget and I worry about their gas bill, but they are in better shape than I am (square dancing) and probably could walk to town.

I left my house this morning at 11:30 and gas at the nearby station was 3.49. When I returned at 5:00 PM, it had gone up 2 cents to 3.51. This is nuts!

Where I live is considered "rural". As in, the entire county has about 5400 people. It's not a small (land area) county, either. The other problem facing rural areas is a function of their distance from each other and major population centers. That is, it costs more to bring things to the area, so the prices are higher to begin with. As the cost of gas has gone up, it's magnified what people elsewhere are seeing - our prices on everything goes up even more.
