Hello, Naturally, I am new! I am two semesters away from finishing the MT course at a private college in IL.
A few questions for you veterans, please?
I have had Pharmacology, A & P I and II, Medical Terminology, Health Information Management, Composition, Keyboarding, and Alternatives in Healthcare. This semester, I am taking Transcription I. Next, I have Transcription II and Law and Ethics in Healthcare. Then, it will be Professional Development and my externship.
I am 41 years old. I have run my own residential housecleaning service for 15 years. I have one child, 12 years old. The thought of working in an office 9 to 5 frightens the heck out of me! I have been my own boss for so long!
I know it is unrealistic to expect to get hired working from home right away. I want to make good money, but money is not the biggest issue. I want to use my brain while I still have it and nurse my housemaid's knees!
My department head's specialty is HIM and she is trying to woo me over to her side. I am not interested in that! I fully researched this field and believe it is for me. When I ask her what I can expect, she is vague. So, what can I expect? :>)
I see that I didn't really ask but one question. I guess I am simply looking for input and opinions!
I know you all get a million newbies, thank you for your consideration.
Tina

Tina, my best advice to you is to use the forum Search feature and review the ton on information on this same subject.
To get the most out of the Search feature, use keywords such as Newbie, graduate, etc. For the Newer Than boxes, delete the default "1" and choose the totally blank field in the drop-down menu beside it. Likewise, leave the Older Than box blank and choose the totally blank field in the drop-down menu beside that.
As you surmised, this type of question is VERY frequent and most, if not all, of the information you need has been covered many times. If you choose the easy way and just wait for answers, I'll tell you that the information you will get will be very broad-spectrum and, perhaps, a bit disheartening.
Outside of this forum, I urge you to go to the counseling office at your private college and inquire from them as to the exact names and contacts for companies that hire their graduates. Experience has shown that getting a meaningful job after graduation from locally and regionally known MT programs can be hit or miss. You mention an externship - which is unpaid work - but do not mention how long that goes on. Please beware of doing that for very long. Externships are a school's way of telling you that while you paid them for training, they did not provide you enough to enter the workforce without additional work experience, for which you are not paid but the company you are externing for most likely is.

Thank you for your reply. I will take your advice about the search.
The college I'm going to requires all their graduates to do an externship, for all courses. It is a very old, well respected school. I have to do 160 hours in a 12 week semester.
I have to say, I have been very pleased with the level of professionalism of all my instructors. They are all very well educated and very dedicated to each of their fields.
I am a dean's list student and very motivated, so I am not overly concerned with my future prospects. I just felt that it was time to start doing some networking.
Thank you, again, for your response.
Tina

I have been going through the archives..WOW! What a treasure chest! Many thanks to all of you who take the time and care enough offer your wisdom and experience.
As a newbie-to-be, I want to say that I appreciate the honesty and candor at this site. In this crazy age of political correctness, it is refreshing to hear people say what they mean and mean what they say! Life is too short to tip-toe through it!
Thanks again. I hope to become a "friend" of this site.
Tina
