Did anyone see this on ABC news this evening? Jeff Deck was also on the Today show yesterday morning (I think). This guy travels around the country finding, and often correcting, typos. My hero!
I can never figure out how to make a link, so you can just go to Typo Eradication Advancement League.

Somehow this thread reminds me of the "Eats Shoots and Leaves" book from a couple of years ago...

I don't find it audacious at all. It's as satisfying as the websites that post photos of crappy signage with apostrophe abuse or the "blog" of "unnecessary" quotation marks. The evolution of language is one thing, but we're talking about total disintegration through the acceptance of illiteracy as our nation's educational norm.
For Michele, here's a link to TEAL. LOL--their mascot is a duck named Gerund.

Do you realize that grammar and spelling the way we know it is only about 100 years old? Prior to that, people were more, um, creative in how they wrote.
You've got your timeline as confused as your logic. A hundred years ago would be 1908, and I can assure you the rules for spelling and grammar were considerably more rigid then than now and a larger percentage of the US population actually knew them.
Now if you wish to back up to the 1600s, what you say would certainly be true, at least as applied to English. It would be true for the very good reason that the wealthy and members of the clergy were the only ones with much education, and even they were frequently barely literate. Those who were truly educated did much of their reading and writing in Greek and Latin. They were quite competent in spelling and grammar in those. English, on the other hand, was still regarded as a barbarous tongue and was, indeed, often just spelled by ear since, unlike the classical languages, the rules of the written language were yet to be codified. As it became more acceptable to write serious scholarly works in the vernacular, the linguists and grammarians got to work trying to codify formal rules for that vernacular and one of the hallmarks of an educated person became the ability to write correct English, not just correct Latin.
In addition, there is no question that spelling and punctuation rules in English have evolved and continue to evolve. However, one sees a lot of egregious errors that have nothing to do with any shift underway in acceptable usage--it's generally not language evolution you're seeing, just ignorance.

If I didn't like my sig so much as it is, I'd be tempted to change it to "Audacious and Smarmy."

I'd be tempted to petition Ellen to rename this forum The Audacity of Smarm except that I have a dictionary and suspect smarmy probably wasn't the correct choice of word for what the poster actually wanted to say. Hard to tell, though, since she has taken her post and slunk away with it now.

I did indeed mean smarmy,in that I think going about correcting signs seems a bit condescending.
I may have voiced an opinion about the persons at TEAL. I may not have had my 100-year timeline correct (OK, I'm number-impaired). But I still maintain that there is no absolute correctness in language.
But in any case, I did not make a personal attack against anyone on this list.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion. But that doesn't mean that you are right, or that others are not going to disagree with you.

When I was in college, majoring in English, I had this teacher who told the class that we could pretty much write however we wanted because there was no correct way. We had to write a short story every night as homework. Oh, we also had to buy his wife's book for the class, on correct grammar! And, even though he never taught one single thing about correct English, when we turned in our final, it had to be grammatically correct.
I'm still scratching my head over that guy.

Uh oh, um, er, hmmm. I checked out the TEAL site and found this:
Your Still Making Typos Seattle, WA - 04/20/208
The title of yesterday's blog entry. I am trying to decide if the gaff here is intentional. I do not know this person, although he seems to have a definite love of the sarcastic, so I am undecided whether he did, indeed, purposefully post it this way.

Probably. This whole thing sounds like something I would do. I couldn't resist the title. Wish I had thought of it!! Wonder if he mentioned a sign a picture of which I was e-mailed recently--"Make English America's OFFICAL Language"?

Didn't I post my little "editing" quiz, "Two Errors Human," here a couple years ago? If you folks want to see it again, let me know.

Here you go.
This is an editing quiz. There are 16 errors consisting of homonyms, misspellings, and mishears in the report below. All the errors are words (not grammar or punctuation). Can you find the errors?
Two Errors Human [Editing/Proofreading Practice] The patient was admitted because of fever, chills, cough and basically asymptomatic condition. He appeared weak and malnourished, obviously do to an adequate diet. On x-ray of the pelvis, there did appear to be a fracture of the hip. As the patient denied any injuries, it was felt that this could be pathologic. A diagnosis of a traumatic fracture was made. On physical exam, the only pertinent findings other than those mentioned above were a regular rhythm of atrial fibrillation with gallop heard.
The patient was taken to surgery, and repair of the hip fracture was done through a curvalinear incision. A small 2 ml mole near the incision sight was dessicated with cautery after a biopsy was taken. Sitology was benign.
The patients coarse was afebrile one, with temperatures over 100 degrees, in spite of inadequate antibiotic regimen. Finally, the patient responded to treatment and was discharged ambulent and on irregular diet.

Eagerly awaiting the answers, because I am missing one.
Quote haggis: The evolution of language is one thing, but we're talking about total disintegration through the acceptance of illiteracy as our nation's educational norm.
So true. Not just educational either, but (semi)functional! Elected officials, the media... It makes me cringe to think how we look to the rest of the world (while we--as a nation--are swaggering and bragging that we can't be overcome..."Who cares if they misunderstand us because we can't spell? We'll just bomb 'em.")
