When both TNM staging and AJCC/UICC staging is referred to, what is the correct way to type it. For example, I usually type stage I (TX NX MX) with the TNM in parenthesis after the AJCC/UICC stage. Is this incorrect? Is there a preferred way?

That's how we do it at the oncology clinic where I work. We do have one doctor that insists on brackets instead of parentheses though. What does your account say?

Really?! I have never seen them with the parentheses or brackets at all! Just stage I, TX NX MX ...

Huh, how'd I miss this topic? Too busy savaging newbies, I guess.

When I worked in hematology/oncology, they wanted it like meri's example as a general rule, but there were a couple that would dictate it with parentheses (and when they DICTATED parentheses, they by-gosh GOT parentheses because they wanted things THEIR way). Lord help, I thought neurologists were picky until I got that group. I will admit, though, that their dictated punctuation was usually spectacularly correct and precise. Their spelling, though....

So, bottom line - I don't KNOW of any rule on it other than "he who has the gold makes the rules." If I didn't know client preference, I personally would use a comma and no parentheses.

Actually, I have completed the cancer classifications section of the MT Reference Style Guide. This section is from the AMA Manual of Style 5th Ed.

To clarify, this question was asked via e-mail to me:

Quote:
Re cancer staging - I'm wondering why the difference.

The second ed. BOS says:

Write TNM expressions with arabic numerals on the line and a space after each number.

T2 N1 M1

Your open source guide says:

The TNM staging is written without spaces between the numbers and letters.

The patient's cancer is T2N1M1.

The 3rd Ed BOS has been updated to be consistent with the AMA style.

Which just goes to prove style is just that--style, something about which tastes may vary, not a rigid and invariable rule that only this is right, any other way is wrong.

As I understand it, the open-source style guide is basing its initial information on a number of recognized style authorities, from the Chicago Manual of Style to the AMA style guide. Hopefully people who have questions about the style decisions shown there will post them along with information on how they handle things differently. That will allow the open-source style guide to eventually reflect a real MT industry consensus rather than the arbitrary decisions of just one or two editors that shape the BOS.

Interesting, I don't think I remember ever seeing it typed like the AMA Guide. Personally, I think it is very hard to read. I have to agree with Tonks, there are no hard-and-fast rules for a most things "style" related, just guidelines.
