Is there anyone out there that uses their stenograph machine to do their medical transcription work? I am a trained court reporter and would love to become an MT but want to use my stenograph machine so I can type at 180wpm or better.

I just started doing medical transcription with my steno machine. I do closed captioning and now am also doing medical transcription work as well. I use Eclipse software and so it can be done.

What is doing closed captioning like? How does the process work, and how do you get into it? I've wanted to do it. Years ago I worked as an operator for a telerelay service (basically, I'd transcribe and read live telephone conversations between a deaf or hard-of-hearing person and a person who could hear (with the deaf person using their TTY or text telephone). I LOVED it. Maybe that's why I fell in love with transcription!

You need to go to court reporting school to graduate at 225 wpm (2 to 4 years on average). Then I trained with a captioning company until I became "on-air ready". That took me about nine months, most can do it in 3-9 months. It was a long and time-consuming process, and at times frustrating trying to reach each speed level, but well worth it!

225 wpm?!? Wow! That's faster than an average conversation (which I just read is about 200 wpm)! What do you do to work up to that speed? Practice, practice, practice? I mean, if you learn all you need to know to be an MT and get a really good dictator, you could probably finish before he does!

It is fast. It seemed unreachable at the time. Captioning they say can get up to speeds of even 260 on average and I believe that. But to do MT you would not have to worry about that getting that high. I just practiced, practiced and practiced. \:\)

I just don't know if my upper extremities could take that for long! Oh, and trust me, there ARE speed demons who pose as dictators! But that IS fast. I read that even auctioneers don't go over 250 wpm.

One thing you want to realize, though, is that in MT there are a lot of longer, harder-to-spell words than regular conversation. I was fast at first as far as typing, but when I started transcription at school, I slowed down. Of course the speed comes back as you get used to it, and my expander is a huge help.

I have never used a steno-thingie so I don't know about that. I hear it can be done though. I always have closed captioning on TV, but I could never do that live (like the news programs). I get lost on what people are saying when just 1 is talking but many have 2-3 people talking at a time! Sometimes the shows must have speech rec, though, because it is soooo bad.

I love the descriptive words CCers have to come up with when there is no dialogue. That must be part of the training. Hee hee.

Would you mind corresponding with me when I get started? I really want to use my steno machine but both schools I have talked to say they don't teach that which I understand but I don't want to start this and then not be able to get through it.

Femme, have you ever watched a steno at work? They're not clacking along like fiends; it's a very low-key, controlled thing. I suspect if they can use expanders, they could actually do twice what a fast keyboard MT could do, and with half the effort.

No, I haven't. Good to know! Don't know why I was thinking it'd be 250 wpm of straight typing and forgot about the stenography. It's all fascinating to me. Something to keep in mind should I move back to the States.

I have! They are amazing to watch. When I serve jury duty, I watch the court reporter constantly. Their hands look almost like they are dancing! They are so graceful. Nothing at all like typing.

As a former court reporter, 250 wpm is not a big deal when you consider that multiple keys are depressed at the same time, not one letter at a time as with typing. In fact, all keys can be depressed at once.

There are many briefs used, too. For example, 1 stroke (using Sten-Ed theory) writes "ladies and gentlemen of the jury," which would be LAOEURPBLG (AOEU is a long "A" and PBLG is final "J").

A single-word example is "court" written as KORT (1 stroke), another would be "automobile" written as AUBL.

Just takes a lot of practice. \:\)

I was in school for court reporting and just couldn't make my hands get over the 160 WPM hump haha. I think I have a diagram of the machine I drew to explain it somewhere. I would think you could go incredibly fast in MT with it and with a lot less "key strokes." Pretty much the entire language is an expansion. Even the word "is" is an expansion. You just push the initial "S" key.

Huh? Sounds neat. Bet it does indeed take lots of practice!

Here ya go, HoosierFemme! Now you can see their hands in motion (and maybe get a chuckle, too).

Here is a link for basic information and keyboard layout (all keys are actually blank). \:\)

Thanks, both of you. I meant to research that, but I got distracted. You did the work for me. I will reread the info on your link, Inaminit, cuz right now my mind is spinning! How long does it take to learn all that? Whew!

It took me about 18 months, as I recall.

Are you an MT? I am a former court reporter as well and am looking into using my steno machine to do medical transcription. I know I would have to pedal a lot less, once I get used to it that is, then a really good MT.
