I have been fortunate enough to work as an IC locally on the same ortho accounts for the past eight years. Unfortunately, I have an MT friend who has recently been searching for a part-time supplemental position to no avail. She has a couple local accounts, but has expanded her search to the MT on-line sites. What she is finding is that more and more people ask you to test, but then never bother to submit the results. She was kicking herself concerned that she was "not up to par", but after questioning a few companies with a follow-up e-mail, she was told that she had passed, and they would keep her resume on file, as the position had been filled. Some companies have not even responded to follow-up e-mails. I just think that it is really rude that she takes the time away from her family, work, and personal life to take the tests; however, the companies do not have the courteous to take the time to respond. I realize we are both looking at this from the MT side and perhaps some insight from an MTSO or other entity would shed some light. Is this a common practice? We were both curious about the occurence of this and if anyone else had this difficulty. Also, before anyone goes there, she went to an accredited school 12 years ago, and has been a working MT for that entire period of time so I would prefer if people just answer the question that has been posed, which again is if not receiving test results or responses is a common practice. She recently had a physician leave the area due to high malpractice insurance in our State, which has resulted in her search. Thanks!

In a nutshell - yep, it's apparently a VERY common practice. We get this same question coming up every now and then.
Companies get deluged in tests these days. There are more newbie MTs than there were 12 years ago applying like mad. I can kind of understand why companies would pick the best scores or best score plus best experience for what they want and ignore the rest. Basically, it's a buyer's market, and if you're selling, you really have to sell hard.
Twelve years of experience sounds great to me, but to some companies (especially larger ones), it may indicate an MT with a limited amount of experience with different specialties and worktypes, who may be also unfamiliar with current industry standards, or who may be just too difficult to retrain because they're used to a particular physician's way of doing things.
I don't mean to be negative at all - just explaining some factors that could be affecting your friend's job search right now.

I guess I just cannot figure out why the would send out so many tests. Personally, I guess I would just send out a few and then see what happens. I mean, you can always send out more, if need be. Thank you for your insight.

Petrescue, the only thing I have to add is to not give up and keep testing. This is a funny and very competitive business. You won't hear anything for months; then all of a sudden you get 4 or 5 job offers in one day. Passing a test is important, but equally important is the way you present yourself. Look at yourself from an MTSO's perspective, and make sure your resume stands out from the rest of the crowd. Best of luck to your friend.

I think it will help just having her hear what has been relayed here thus far. I have encouraged her to join this group, as I think it will help to know there are others going through the same experience. Thanks to all.

Thank you for your responses. I have an update, she tested for a company on Wednesday, and was offered the job on Thursday! She started on Saturday and loves it so far! Thanks again. Everyone who is in the same position, I would encourage you to keep your chin up, and keep testing!

My name is Kate and I will be finished with school in about a month. I don't want to appear uninformed, but I'm curious about the tests that the boards keep mentioning. What are they all about and could someone explain them to me please? I have to admit that it seems daunting to me at my age to think about hitting the pavement again to look for work but I'm always up for anything.
Thank you in advance for any/all responses.

The ones I've taken were medical terminology tests and sample dictation tests with different accents.

So true about the intermittent nature of the job market. I applied to an MTSO and then forgot about it. Six months later I was contacted and hired within a few days.
