This part of the HZ is opened for 2 reasons. The first reason is the email I got today after someone read Janice's post about 16/65 being the standard rate for VBC pricing in the MT Biz section, they wrote:
Who needs a white paper? That's old school now. We've got Google. Put in vbc standard rate and see what comes up.
So, I tried it ... try it for yourself and see what comes up
Then I got another email:
It's an interesting issue! Assuming that MT managers are willing to make business decisions based on information gleaned from the Internet, rather than doing a real business analysis the question becomes: What exactly would it take to really enact a new standard of MT pay?
Would Julie's publishing a white paper do it? What about a few ads on MT employment sites? What about a few posts on MT sites and WAHM sites to the effect of, "When my company switched to VBC my line rate went up to 16 cents per 65 characters?"
I mean really!! Maybe there is a group of untapped managers out there just waiting to be exploited by Internet savvy, MT employees. Maybe we could indeed turn the tide of dropping MT compensation rates!
Interesting food for discussion indeed. Bearing in mind the definition of a white paper from Wikipedia:
More recently, the term "white paper" has also come to refer to documents that argue non-governmental positions as well. For example, many white papers today expose the benefits of particular technologies and products. These types of white papers are almost always marketing communications documents and are designed to promote a specific company's solutions or products as it relates to the issue or topic examined. As a marketing tool, it is important to note that these papers will always highlight information favorable to the company authoring or sponsoring the paper while minimizing any negative aspects related to the company's involvement with the issue, product or technology. Today the commercial white paper is the most common type of white paper. Such white papers are often used to generate sales leads, establish thought leadership, or educate customers - this is quite different from the original use of white papers though generally valued by the authors clients. White papers, when written objectively, are often regarded as a credible source of information and/or education.
We have opened the HZ as a vehicle for any MT to offer their very own white paper/papers regarding the issues facing the business of medical transcription today. You may post your white paper here in this thread. If you need help writing your white paper you can take a look at the one that started this discussion in the first place:
A standard unit of measurement for transcribed reports
For the sake of clarity and to minimize confusion with multiple topics in one thread, those wishing to discuss topics brought to attention by white papers should create a separate topic thread using the title of the white paper and place it here in the HZ.
I have to admit it certainly is an exciting moment as some of us appear to be creating standard-setting history thanks to Google ... who knows what might happen next!
