I wish this was only to say merry christmas, but I have a request for colon cancer information. My husband announced his diagnosis last night. I have read so far that it is treatable. We are at the point of waiting for a referral for a colonoscopy.

I still want to wish everyone a Happy New Year,

Research and treatments for colon cancer have come a long way in the last few years. If it's discovered early, it's considered VERY treatable. Chemotherapy is no fun, but there are many other methods of treatment out there. Keep your head up, and try to stay positive!

Thank you all for your prayers and encouragements to hang in there. Bless you. I will focus on continuing to be positive.
I am planning to grab some more literature while I wait at the hospital. I keep adding to this list cardiology, colonoscopy, coma (my late mom)pulmonary, I would like to keep you all posted. By the way the baby picture with santa is great.
Thanks again for the inspiration on New Year's Eve.

Hi -- I have first-hand, personal experience. I was diagnosed in June 2003. Went to the ER for severe bowel obstruction. I had been having symptoms of constipation for two weeks. I thought that if I ate enough fiber and drank enough water, I would be able to fix it by myself. That didn't work. From the ER I was taken for emergency surgery to remove the obstruction. They were confident that it would be a malignant tumor, and they were right. I also had lymph node involvement. About 10 inches of transverse and descending colon were removed. I was discharged a week later. Because of my age and the fact that I had fibroids in the uterus, they felt that the uterus and ovaries needed to go at the same time. Colon cancer frequently metastasizes to those organs. I began chemo soon after which lasted for six months. Chemo for colon cancer (at least for my doctor's protocol) was way easier than it is for other cancers. No nausea, vomiting, or hair loss. I felt somewhat tired, however.

Two years later, a colonoscopy revealed a fairly large sessile polyp so I had another chunk of colon removed. Another week in the hospital, but no malignancy that time and no chemo.

I am still here and would be happy to help you in any way that I can. It was really great for me to hear that there were survivors. I know how you are feeling right now. After my surgery, everyone wanted to tell me about some friend or family member who had the same thing. When I would question about the outcome, it seemed like everybody had died. It was so uplifting for me to hear that some people can have good outcomes, so I hope I have uplifted you, too.

Please feel free to PM me if you want more detailed information. Of course, every doctor has his/her own unique way of doing things, so I know that you realize that your mileage may vary!

Lynda

My mom had colon cancer 10 years ago. She had a portion of colon removed and has been cancer-free since. Today she is a happy, healthy, 72-year-old woman.

You got lucky Mary. I lost my mom to colon cancer about 12 years ago. I have no doubt that if she were experiencing the same thing today though, medicine has come far enough that her outcome would be very different. They have learned SO much about this specific kind of cancer in the last 10 years. Obviously not all stories end up the way mine has, it's nice to see some good recovery stories!

Yes, thank you for the recovery stories. I can keep encouraging my husband. He had a period of being terrified yesterday. So I took him up the the highest hill top to view a wonderful scenery. Believe it or not I was thinking of how encouraging you all are. Thank you.

Prayers for your family! I know how hard an illness with a close loved one can be.

Thank you very much for all the prayers and encouragements. I feel like my husband is making progress. We had the first test and removed some of the polyps. In the Dr. visit yesterday, the Dr. announced the findings to be benign. We are going to have one more test to find out if the polyps are in only in one place. In my journey while waiting for procedures, I read a poem in regards to if we could just go back to before the diagnosis. I am truely happy to say I can have that wish.
I also started an uncredited class in cancer biology in the process. I will finish this class for my own reference. I am on the part about angiogenesis. I find this to be interesting and another way of keeping my self up. Hard is the correct phrase to use for an illness in a close loved one.
Thank you.
Bless you all for your encouragements.
