Thanks in advance for any information regarding this topic.

I understand the pay for medical transcription is based on the line count, especially when working from home.

What I would like to find out is what the pay is based on for coding, specifically if you work from home? What is the average starting rate? And if you work at a hospital or office, what is the average starting rate per hour?

I appreciate any information anyone might consider sharing.

Thanks.

Good question! I'm not sure there is an answer that fits all parts of the country. Cost of living is higher in some areas than others and so are pay scales/wages. There are also sometimes sign-on bonuses and relocation bonuses, etc. Many of the employers across the country are starting their new coders out on site, telling them they will be sending all their coders home in the next few weeks/months.

Hopefully we'll get some better answers for you.

Oh! I just thought of something. You can go to the web sites for your local hospitals and look for job listings. You can go to some of the online national job sites and see what they are listing. AHIMA.org or try this: http://www.ahima.org/membership/member_profile_data.asp

Thank you for the information. It would be nice to get more information about if pay is by the hour or by the report. Maybe someone will reply with more information about that.

Thanks!

If you are working as an employee of the facility (hospital or clinic), pay is usually based on time (hourly). There are productivity standards to meet, and you might get a production bonus if you exceed a certain amount.

If you are working as a contract coder for a contract coding company, pay is usually per encounter or per inpatient hospital stay.

Thank you for the information. Would you be able to give a round about estimate of what the starting hourly and per encounter pay ranges are? I realize they must differ by region and employer. I am just looking for a starting point. Also, how many encounters on average would someone average in an hour if say they were a new graduate from Andrews school?

Thanks \:\)

The AAPC does a yearly salary survey that is broken down regionally. Why not see if it has information you can use? http://www.aapc.com/documents/Salary_Survey2007.pdf

I don't know that anyone could specify a starting point. It would depend on local factors, but also on the type of job. A small office coding job is a starting place for many coders, who consider the lower salary a good trade for the opportunity to gain experience. Other students begin working in hospital or large clinic Health Information Management departments while still in school. They take file clerk or other positions in order to gain related experience and enhance their ability to move into a higher level coding job.

Some employers will now send new hires home after an on-site training period. Contract coding jobs, however, typically are reserved for individuals who have demonstrated reliable accuracy in coding, based on experience in their jobs, and who have been credentialed by the AAPC or AHIMA. Some contract companies may require 5 or more years of experience, too.

The salary survey above will give you an indication of the salaries in your area. As with any career, you have to expect to make less in the first few years. That applies whether you are just starting out or changing careers.
