As some of you know, DH and I had to take full emergency custody of my grandsons. These are the twin sons of my oldest son who died in February of 2005. The boys were raped by their mother's father in November 2005 and were being subjected to other physical and emotional abuse by the mother and her boyfriends. We found out about it in August 2007 and got full, permanent custody on Sept 11. The last two and a half months have been pure, unadulterated hell. We have exhausted all of our savings on lawyers, investigators, counseling for the boys, furniture for them, clothes, etc. While all of this was going on, my health has gone completely to hell. I've had two severe attacks of newly diagnosed diverticulitis and passed a kidney stone, all within 14 days. While I was involved with the legal stuff, I found out that when the money finally ran out from the savings, DH took the mortgage money from last month and this month to pay the last of the lawyer fees and the last counseling bills that we had before the boys were approved on our insurance. There has been a major problem at his company and so he has only received about 1/6th of the commission he has earned in the last two months and today we found out that one of the fuel injectors in his car went bad after only 38K miles and it's not covered by warranty. His car is his lifeline to his clients, so there is no way we could put off that repair. Foreclosure begins on the house in 30 more days. We may be able to get some money from his retirement, but what happens when that is gone?
I'm literally at the end of my rope. I'm barely sane but I don't have the luxury of a total breakdown because the boys need DH and me to be strong for them. DH is working as much as humanly possible, but the bottom has fallen out of the housing market and so builders aren't building and buyers aren't buying. If it could possibly go wrong, it has done so.
I can't pray anymore and I feel as though I have lived the Book of Job. I can't be strong for DH because it's taking all of what few psychological reserves I have left to be strong for the boys. I still believe in the power of prayer, I just can't do it anymore. I'm terrified.
Please pray for us. Please ask that we don't lose our home. Please ask that we can find some reserve of strength so that we don't let the boys down. I don't know what else to do or where to turn.
Thank you.

My heart goes out to you. At least your grandchildren are safe and in a good environment.
Have you tried any social services to help at all? I know I also have heard of organizations specifically for grandparents raising grandchildren, if only for emotional support.
Stay strong!!

First, how old are your boys? Are there expenses that others may be able to help out with (if they are still in diapers, maybe cloth...I could send you some to start).
Second, check into SSI for them.
Third, if they are a certain age in your state, their services should be covered by the state. Like physical therapy and evaluation for my son should have been covered by the school district, but I did not know about it at the time, so we went through our private insurance. I would at least try...definitely worth the shot.
Fourth, know that we have all been somewhere stretched. Keep in mind that you are doing right by the children, and that in itself counts a LOT for karma points.

You're on my prayer list, Catherine. God bless you and your husband for all that you've done for the boys!

Catherine,
As others have said, I will pray for you and yours. You could also seek assistance perhaps from your local churches. You should seek assistance for the boys through social services. Under the circumstances, I surely believe they will help. I am a grandmother also and I know that our grandchildren need us more now than grandparents were needed in the past. Yes, you have to stay strong for them. They have already been through more than any human should have to suffer. I believe in the power of prayer and have witinessed its affect in my own life. Your family physician may be able to give you some type of medication to help you through this. Sometimes we have to do that in order to carry on. We will all pray for you and yours.
