I have narrowed my school choices to Andrews or M-Tec. I have spoken with Andrews and have a good perspective on their teaching methods. Are the two schools similar in their courses and teaching methods? I notice that M-Tec has a much longer list of educational materials. Does this mean that their teaching is more extensive? I know that both schools base their programs on the AHDI Model Curriculum II, and I am confident that I will get the requirements needed. What I want to know is: Are the training methods and course work similar? What are the differences, if any? It has been a loooonnnngggg time since I was in school and I may need some 'hand-holding'.

Since you say speaking to Andrews gave you a good perspective on their methods, I would suggest that the best way to get a good perspective on M-TEC's methods would be to speak to M-TEC. I think you'll find Susan will be just as happy to talk to you as Linda was.

They are both good schools. Choosing between them is a matter of talking things over at length with the director of both institutions, going over their course descriptions in detail, and then deciding which feels like the best fit for you personally.

I don't think you will ever find anyone who actually went to both schools to give you an insider comparison day by day, because no one who goes to either comes out in need of any additional schooling. ;-)

Medtype: I think I'm in the same boat you are right now--trying to decide between M-Tec or Andrews. I've read extensively and fortunately, I think both would serve us well; its like choosing between truffles or french silk pie. \:\)

M-tec's website makes you feel like you will know it all after graduation, and I love that. Andrews site gives you a real sense of confidence for job placement. Maybe I'll pull names from a hat..... Good luck with your decision and education...

Med-Type-I thought I had narrowed my choices too, but find I want to take a look at VLC as well again. I too have not been in school for a very long time as well....

2busy2: I love both truffles and silk pie :-) What I liked about both schools is the instructors. I have been looking at VLC and I like the videos that they show...So, I will continue to look at all three schools and talk with them before I make my final decision. Also, it is the money with me...don't know about anybody else....but you do get what you pay for...

Sparrow: I spoke with both M-Tec and Andrews and both at one point said "the only other school I would recommend would be ..." and they both said each other's school! Therefore, I would really think about that in your decision. VLC may be a decent school with a reasonable course, but in the long run...job placement and recognition in the working field... your best choice is probably M-Tec or Andrews! Good luck.

If I can help answer any questions regarding programs, or the profession in general, please feel free to email me privately at sfrancis@mtecinc.com

If the M-TEC program is not a good fit for you, I would recommend the Andrews school as the alternative. I would advise anyone researching schools to check the approved school list at http://www.ahdionline.org. There may be controversy surrounding the approval list, and you will find some schools on the list that are a better fit and possibly a higher caliber of education than others, but there are also many you won't find listed there as well.

Make sure as you research that you leave no stone unturned! \:\) Talk to the experts here at MT Chat, and ask questions as often as you need to. Feel free to email us privately if that is more comfortable for you.

This is not a simple work from home typing job. There is a lot more involved, so please do your research before jumping in. Take this part of the journey seriously, please. You will be happy in the long run that you did!

If you need any help, please let me know!

Ahem. I seriously doubt that. Both were excellent schools BEFORE that farcical pretense of "grading" educational programs and both EXCEEDED what apparently passes as "adequate." My guess is that the standards were dumbed down because these two schools set the bar too high and most of the rest didn't care to have to meet that mark. As a result, the school approval process means virtually nothing.

I am currently a student for M-TEC. I absolutely love them. I previously took some basic medical transcription classes at my local college and compared to M-TEC they were a joke.

I remember when I sent my first assignment to my instructor at M-TEC. Previously, my teacher did not even check spelling, grammar, or format. He always told me that I was doing great. LOL. Imagine my surprise when I received my first assignemt back from M-TEC and it was littered with mistakes and "footnotes." At that moment, I knew that M-TEC was the real deal. With each mistake came an explanation of what I did wrong and where I could find references to understand my mistakes. My instructor is an invaluable resource, and I find the whole program to be outstanding.

I listened to the advice in this forum when I selected a school. There are only 2 schools - M-TEC and Andrews. I chose M-TEC and recently graduated. A job was offered to me for an IC position that did not require testing because of the school's reputation and my high GPA. It will give me the flexibility I desire. Either school will prepare anyone for a medical transcription position. Good luck in your decision. My contract is signed, sealed, and delivered thanks to this forum's advice and an excellent school! \:\)
