So you thought you were a real CMT?

Every so often (usually after the MTSO I work for has received a spate of letters inquiring about work from new MT grads claiming to be CMTs) it becomes necessary to point out to students (and would be MT students) that there is only one CMT credential that is recognized by the MT industry, the one offered through testing with AHDI after the new MT has several years of working experience behind them.
You can only earn the CMT by taking the test through AHDI not by attending classes for 18 months or (in some cases) less.
There is a new credential, RMT, specifically designed by AHDI for newly graduated MT students to use as a benchmark to demonstrate to employers that the new MT does indeed have those basic working skills necessary to perform the job of transcription. This is also the only RMT credential that is recognized by the medical transcription industry. Information about the RMT is available here
RMT certification information
New MTs and potential student MTs need to be aware that attending any one of a number of MT schools that advertise their graduates receive CMT credential by completing their course and taking the CMT exam from the NHA (National Healthcareer Association) is not the same thing as earning that credential through the testing that is only available from the only professional organization that exists for MTs.
CMTs who have successfully taken the AHDI CMT exam have their names and legitimate credential status listed for any potential employer (MTSO) to verify at the AHDI website ... it can be a real bucket of cold water for a newly graduated student, presenting themselves to a future employer as a CMT, to learn that they are not on the AHDI list and that the employer has the distinct impression they are deliberately misrepresenting themselves as credentialed when they are not.
Current list of CMTs
There are some instances when "ignorance is not bliss" ... this would be one of them.

Nae, I would like to link this thread to my private message board. You've put the information about certification options here in a handy form for everyone.
Students and graduates need to STAY aware that there are some who present themselves to be what they are not. They also need to be aware that it isn't a problem answering "no" to the question whether one is a CMT. They don't need to be embarrassed to say that they are not. It becomes an ENORMOUS problem when one incorrectly answers "Yes" to that question. To put it more bluntly than I normally like to be, it means that you are either dishonest or ignorant of the facts. Either way, it isn't usually what an employer really wants connected with their company.
Students and graduates need to be skeptical and not always believe what people tell them about how successful they are, how much money they make, what excellent transcriptionists they are, etc. A few people have been caught falsely presenting themselves as Andrews graduates. Most employers verify the status with me. They know our graduates aren't perfect, but they have completed a certain amount of studies acceptably. They also don't want to hire dishonest people, regardless of their skill level.
I've known dozens of people who claimed to be the best at transcription when years later I find out that they may have been the only one to think so.

Be my guest
I think it should be posted on the AHDI forum in several places as well In fact I just had this conversation with a couple of folks yesterday about that. Even though they do mention in their main pagers that their CMT test is the only one that is industry-recognized that is about as far as it goes.
I tend to lean toward the less convulted, "this test promoted by the NHA is NOT industry recognized and it is most certainly not what an MTSO is looking to hear if they are asking the potential hire if they are a CMT or not." I find that kind of plain speaking is much more effective when it comes to getting potential MT students to pay attention to the message.

I think it's probably going to get worse now, due to the name change.
Before, it was a CMT test for an MT administered through the AAMT. Now it's the AHID which isn't even close to MT and people probably won't even know what the AHID has to do with MT anyway. (Does that makes sense? LOL)

I am in PA and it is in my experience that being a CMT doesn't amount to a hill of beans 'round these parts. I know none of the hospitals in this area care about the title. Personally I don't think much of anything AAMT (or whatever it calls itself) does. (Again, I am sorry if I sound particularly nasty today. Methinks someone needs a vacation.)

There are only approximately 2800 CMTs? That would explain why so many healthcare facilities don't require it and certainly don't pay more for it. They haven't heard of it.

Hmm... after reading this, I'm curious to see if any of you have heard of Allied Medical School??? I'm currently working towards my "certification" through them. I do receive emails from AHDI, but I'm not sure if I was signed up when I became an Allied Medical School student, or perhaps from another MT site I've been to. Anyway, it'd be good to know what any of you have heard about Allied's program...

There's a discussion right in this forum entitled "Anyone here from Allied Business School" that should prove interesting reading material for you.

Yes, I just posted there. Thank you! I have to admit though, I didn't like what I read!
