I'm just a little guy with a few clients. One doctor (we are still picking up tapes and printing and delivering work) wants to go digital. I'm kind of old school and lost and don't even know where to begin this. I've done digital work for other services before, but this would be a direct client through "my" service.
Could you point me in the correct direction to find out how best to get this set up and where to begin?

To run a digital transcription business, you need a method for the clients to record their voices in digital form, a computer voice player/wave player with footpedal control at the transcription end that can recognize and play back files in the codec used by the recording device, and a reliable and securely encrypted method of moving voice files from the clients to you and transcribed documents from you back to the client.
If you search the archives here, you will find any number of discussions of pros and cons of various handheld digital recorders/telephone digital recording systems, various wave players and foot pedal issues, and various methods of moving files, from e-mail (not recommended) through ftp (recommended only if you use secure ftp with a properly administered server) to rather sophisticated online hosting sites.
I would suggest you start your research with the archives here and at other MT-oriented boards/newsgroups and then complete your research with some googling. Little guy or big guy, the only way someone is going to give you the complete blueprint for a digital service or hand you a turnkey solution ready to go is if you pay them a consulting fee or pay them for the system they are selling--and even then, without doing some basic research of your own, you'll have no idea if you are hiring a good or a bad consultant or purchasing a good or bad system.

I don't know if this will help you, but I found this software program that sounds promising and didn't seem to cost that much (unless there's hidden costs that I'm not aware of). One of my doctors is going to try it out and give me some feedback, if you want I can let you know what they think of it. I pasted a link below. Good luck!
