Having previously experienced only DOS, I have been typing my account on a new Win-based platform (it's supported by a Java program) for a week now. I have had virtually no trouble getting accustomed to it, as they did a thorough job training the team to it and provided us with a comprehensive, easy-to-follow manual. This platform has more steps to it than the old one; they seem as if they should not impact line count too badly. I am dismayed though that my line count has been cut in half, and I would like to have some feedback from those of you who are knowledgeable about the different platforms that are out there. I particularly would like to know if the different programs count lines the same way or not. At first glance with a few reports (have not had the opportunity yet to compare any reports that have virtually no change), it does appear that the line counts are around 25% to 30% lower with the new program.

Oftentimes when a company institutes a new platform the method of counting lines does change, and it is rarely in favor of the MT. It could simply be that the old platform counted headers and footers and that the new one does not, or it could be much more complex than that. Unfortunately, getting an exact answer from your company may be near-impossible.

Your core question seems to be if there is a basic difference between DOS and Windows applications. The answer should be no - the document produced is the document produced and that should be the basis of line counting determinations.

Our company switched from DOS two years ago. All of our line counts dropped dramatically, to the point where some of us were (& probably some still are) are on the cusp of losing their job due to not being able to meet the line count requirement.

I attribute it to the fact that we are no longer having our spaces counted towards the line count. Management doesn't care. They don't seem to realize the value of having an easliy readable document where the words don't all run together.
