FTP question-kind of long....

Good morning,
Not sure if I should be asking this question on a medical transcription site, but I've always come here when stuck and everyone has always been very helpful. So, here goes: I have tested with a couple of national companies without success (I wish they would tell me what I am doing wrong!) I have been an at-home medical transcriptionist for 8+ years (regular transcriptionist for 15+ years before that), but didn't graduate from an MT school. I am now testing for a transcription company for a position as a corproate transcriptionist and they have sent me an FTP file. In past testing, I downloaded a software program from a company first and then signed in to retrieve the files. This company is different. They sent me an FTP file, which I downloaded and it came through iTunes. The instructions were to type it in Word and then e-mail it back to them. So for me to do this I have to minimize the iTunes controls and then click into a word document and type and then click back into iTunes for the next sentence and then click back into word....ugh!
I have never used ftp files before. I searched this site and only came up with my previous question and a couple of classified ads. I also googled "ftp" and learned about ftp files and how they work. Am I missing something with this? Am I supposed to have a specific type of software program to use? Can I get a program and a pedal in the same package? I haven't purchased a pedal yet, because in my research on this site into working via the internet it was suggested not to buy a pedal until I was hired by a company because they may require a specific type. The test is from 2006 and it is very generic so I don't think there is an issue right now about privacy if I e-mail it back in word. They said they always e-mail the work back. The work will mostly be recorded statements and there are no identifying names, just code numbers.
Also, if I use iTunes, can I purchase a pedal that will work with it?
Am I in over my head? I truly appreciate the time taken to help me as I'm very confused.
Thanks very much! Mezz

I'm not a technical expert, but I'm not really sure what you mean here. From my experience, FTP is the type of setup where you use FTP software to access the client's files, i.e., you log in and then can transfer their files to your computer, whether they are document files or voice files. Voice files would be .dss, .wav, or other formats, which you would then load into your player software and transcribe using a footpedal that controls the sound file player (or use hotkeys on the keyboard).
Express Scribe is an example of a free player that will play many types of voice file: http://www.nch.com.au/scribe/index.html
Once you open this program, you load the sound file. If you don't have a pedal yet, you can control playback with hotkeys (defined under Settings).
As far as the FTP - there are a number of them available. The service should tell you if you can use any of them or if they have specific suggestions.
Clear as mud?

Right, ftp is not a type of file, it is a program that is used to send files of all types. It has nothing to do with how you transcribe the file. I have tried the Express Scribe which Rae mentions above. I have also used GearPlayer. These are program for simply transcribing straight off your hard drive, usually with the help of a footpedal connected to a game port or USB port. If you visit TranscriptionGear.com, you can learn about these programs and foot pedals.

Hi Rae & Gisele, I have Express Scribe on my computer already. I used it before when testing, using the 'hot keys'. The file the company sent me says it's an MP3 file. When I click on it, it asks me to run or save it. No matter which I click, there isn't an option to save it using Express Scribe. I don't think the file they sent is in a format like the one's you mentioned. I did send an e-mail to them explaining the file went to iTunes and asked if they had directions for this and the person responded saying she couldn't help me. I'm thinking maybe she is a recruiter and not a transcriptionist. I'll have to write back and ask for more detailed info as to the program to use.
Like I said in my OP - I've always received great info when I have a problem and ask for help on this website. Thank you both so much for your replies. Have a wonderful weekend! Mezz

Well, ES should play MP3 files far as I know, so either you need to upgrade ES or get the right codec (I think that is the word) for MP3 files or maybe you aren't loading it right.... Best to ask the service for clarity.

When I load MP3 files, I hit save and save to my desktop. Then I open Express Scribe and hit load, browse for the folder (desktop) and there it is. You can also click and drag them from the desktop directly into the Express Scribe icon. I have had them land in iTunes, too, and then I think I just browsed to it from the 'load' window in Express Scribe, but that is a more roundabout route.
Hope that helps!

mezz, your iTunes has been selected as the default player for all MP3 files, I bet.
If you save your file to your desktop, right click should open a menu that gives you a choice to 'open with...', and if ES is one of those chices you can open it that way.

That sounds promising. Sometimes you have program set automatically to open without even knowing it, looks like iTunes is jumping the gun on you.

Kimmie, I followed your instructions and it worked! However, I can't seem to move ES to my desktop. I had to go to the start button, click on ES and a menu opened beside it that said ES, which I hit and it opened. I then hit load, etc.
I right-clicked ES while it was open to see if I could move it to my desktop, but that wasn't an option. I went into my program files and it wasn't there.
Right now I have an icon for ES set-up on my desktop but that starts the entire downloading process. Should I try that again and maybe there will be an option to put it on the desktop?
tropsicleAfter, I also tried your instructions; however, it didn't give ES as an option so I hit browse and I couldn't find it there either.
Thank you all for helping me. If you were here with me I'd give you each a huge hug!!! Mezz

Try this- click on the start button and right click on ES, then go to 'send to', which will give you the option to create a shortcut on your desk top. I'm glad my instructions worked for you!
