Hi,

I'm new to this forum and have been reading it all weekend. I'm a SAHM and haven't worked in almost 10 years. But, before kids I worked for a teaching hospital for 7 years and do have some medical background. I'm itching to get back into the job market and I'm thinking of enrolling in one of the online MT programs, either Andrews or M-TEC, but have some general questions. Realistically, what is the job market like when you finish a program? I've read where some individuals get 2-3 job offers when they finish. Is that really the case? I guess I'm somewhat skeptical. I honestly know nothing of online MT programs. I'm just gaining knowledge of the schools from what I've read on the board. Do employers really know which online programs are the best or worst? I'm just trying to do my homework on both the type of education and the job outlook should I pursue this career. Any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you!
Molly

Yes, and yes. One of the reasons why so many companies state that they require 2 years' experience is to weed out people who have very little or insufficient training. Many companies will waive that requirement for a graduate of Andrews or M-TEC, because they know it is an excellent training program that teaches you what you need to know. As I'm sure you've read, you won't get rich as an MT, and might not even make very much money in the beginning. But you definitely shouldn't have any trouble finding a job at home if you graduate from Andrews or M-TEC. Most places require you to pass an employment test, which you should have no trouble passing after completing a course from either of those schools. And both of those schools are very supportive as far as helping you to get a job.

Good luck to you! And welcome to MT Chat!

I thought all the newbies were being warned to stay away from us meanies!

Yes, the employers do know about the programs. Several members of this forum are MTSOs and get to see the end results up close, so to speak.

As far as the job outlook...no one can guarantee anything. If you read the forums, you'll hear about things like voice recognition, offshoring, and EMRs, all of which affect the future of MT. You may well be able to happily work in MT until you retire, or you may want to get into something else in 5 years.

I can only say I have never heard an Andrews or M-TEC grad complain about their education or being unable to find a job. Most of them seem to come in here and gleefully say "I graduated yesterday and have a job today!" (Okay, I'm exaggerating, but not by a whole lot.) Those grads also seem to have more choices open to them, like some of them being able to go into acute care (which pays slightly better) right after school. The grads from these programs don't need special "internships" or whatever to ease them into actually doing the job.

I will say that I did not attend any of the schools discussed on this board. I received my training OTJ and in many respects, I think I missed out by not receiving a full and appropriate education.

Welcome to the boards and good luck with your search. I agree good schooling is a must.

Endiqua, it is good to know that there are other people who got started OTJ as I did. I got thrown into it by a temp agency and found that I liked it. I did research and tried to learn "a little bit about a lot of things" over the years. I do agree though that a proper school is the way to go.

I graduated from Andrews over 3 years ago and had 3 job offers immediately. The reason for this is because Andrews prepares you so well that you are able to pass the employment tests and show the companies that you have the skills needed to do well even though you lack the experience. The employers do know which schools are the best because they see what the graduates can do when they take their tests and hire them. Having my own company now, I have seen a big difference between graduates from these two schools and from some of the others. You can't go wrong with either one. However, I am naturally partial to Andrews after seeing what that education has done for me.
