Still new to this field, just got a job finally but it seems like they're expecting a lot of work. there are 9 drs and they expect 1 person to do it all in 40 hrs. granted it's only family drs and usually they're not all here but usually 7-8 a day. it's only SOAP reports. can anyone tell me how to figure out if they're expecting too much? it's done the old-fashioned way with cassette tapes and a transcribing machine. the woman who recently left the job was here for 18 years.

Most companies require 1000-1500 lines a day as a minimum, depending on whether spaces are counted or not. For me, that could be anywhere from 30-60 reports per day, depending on the physician in question, length of the report, etc.

Hmm... Let's say 25 patients per doc per day. That's 175 to 200 reports per day. Hmm... 20 patients per day. That's 140 to 160. But still. If they transcribe regularly and it's just SOAP and they don't run more than a minute or so. I would think you could do that. You won't know until you try. It will take you time to get up to speed. I hope they are giving you room to do that. Could be that they repeat themselves so much, it will be a piece of cake! But that's still definitely full time!

When I started MT, I was the only MT for an orthopedic department in a teaching hospital. There were 7 professors and 10 interns. They were 3 weeks behind in transcription when I started. They had broken away from Medical Records because they were never caught up. It took me a while to catch up and I did work overtime until that happened, but when I left after almost 2 years, I was about 15 minutes behind the doctors and they were a happy bunch! I talked them into using a Lanier system after I had been there a while, and I worked on a 286 with WP 5.1 and no shortcut program, just macros. I thought I was in heaven. It will take you a while to get up to speed, but when you do, it will be a breeze.

All the comments above are certainly valid, but I have a feeling they might actually need a second MT, depending on how much they dictate. You should not be feeling so burdened that you feel like you have to go at top speed all the time and are always tense.

I think it would be too much by you being new to the field. My first job was a small company with mostly SOAP reports from 3 doctors and but it stil took me a while to get with it. You learn a lot in training, but you actually do not realize things that you don't know until you actually start working; especially since there is noone there to help you out. I would try, but also while I am trying, I would try and convince them to update their method. I don't know much about a transcribe machine, or whether they have a word expander on it or not, but I am sure a word expander would help. Good Luck.

I think the transcriber machine she is talking about is what plays the microcasettes. It looks like a very old-fashioned (60s-70s) tape player.

I don't know about editing, whether 'repairing' speech recognition or QA of the MT, but with transcribing most companies require somewhere between 1000 and 1500 lines per day for full time, depending on the account. Some MTs can do twice that.

How many lines can you reasonably transcribe per hour in an eight-hour period? How many lines can you reasonably edit in an 8-hour period. How good of an MT are you? Those answers should give you something to start with.

There are a lot of things to consider. Is it an account that you do on a regular basis? If you have shortcuts and/or macros. Are you familiar with the account? First off, I would not worry about how much you can do, but how accurate you are, and speed will eventually come along. I have favorite accounts where I can do about 300 lines per hour because I have macros, and then sometimes I am given accounts that I am not familiar with at all, nor do I normally do those types of accounts that much and have to do a lot of research, and I may not do but 75 lines an hour. It just depends.

I supposed that would depend on how much time you waste using the shift key.

I used to type for 3 doctors and 1 CFNP and it took me about 30 hours per week. One doc was in 5 days per week and saw anywhere from 20-30 patients per day. He sometimes was really talkative, but not usually too bad. One doc was short and sweet and did about 10 patients per day, but his CFNP did the other 20 and was pretty chatty. They were in 4 days a week. These 2 I was a subcontractor and was paid by the line. They were both family doctors. The third doc saw patients 3 days (surgery the other 2, which I did not do as it was at the hospital), but she went on and on, and repeated herself a lot. She saw roughtly 20 patients per day. I did use an expander and had templates for all of them. I was paid to work 18 hours per week on her dictation, and if I was caught up with her I helped out on a couple other doctors in the office (cardiothoracic surgery and/or cardiolgy and/or sports medicine/orthopedics). She was an ENT. I also have 3 boys to interrupt me (a lot) as I worked from home. You probably will need another MT to help out with that many doctors.
