From this week's Vitals:

Quote:
Credentialing Team Votes to Open up the RMT Exam

At the monthly meeting of the Credentialing Development Team last week, the decision was made to allow anyone to take the RMT exam. Previously, if a candidate qualified for the CMT they were not allowed to sit for the RMT exam. "If the long-term goal is to require mandatory credentialing in order to practice transcription, and the RMT would be the credential used as the benchmark, the RMT exam should not be exclusionary in any way," said Kim Buchanan, CMT, FAAMT, Director of Credentialing and Education for AHDI. This change takes effect immediately.

Well, I hear it's a pretty easy test.... Whether a working MT will be motivated to take it is another matter.

Yes, it was easy, or at least the beta exam was easy. The RMT did open a couple doors for me when they would not have been open otherwise. I took the beta exam because I'm cheap, but I'm glad I did. The format of the test, to the best of my recollection, was just like the CMT, just easier. Future CMT candidates might find themselves a little less anxious with the mystery of the CMT test if they take the RMT first.

I'm not an AAMT lover or even a member. I just give them my hard-earned money when I want to take a test.

Here is a question for my fellow MTs. What about folks like me who have years of experience (18 in my case), who have never been through an MT program (Andrews, M-TEC, Career Step, etc.), and who have no desire to take the CMT, would we benefit from this credential?

Do we really think the day is coming when you will have to have a credential (RMT, CMT) behind your name to work in MT?

I believe they would probably recommen you the refresher course they have through one of their vendors, forgive me, the name does not come to mind right this second, but it is online classes that you can do and is probably listed on the AHDI website somewhere with the information about the RMT exam, but I believe you could still sit for the exam if you did not.

Personally I think that for a new MT just starting out that might be an advantage in a very competitive job market, but for an MT with much experience I can't honestly say that would be such a benefit. Undoubtedly AHDI would swear on bibles that yes indeedy everybody is gonna need a credential ... someday \:\) I am not exactly holding my breath on that one. \:\)

Nae,

I can see you and I think alike about the credentialing of everyone, and I agree that new MTs should do it for their own sake.

My employer is considering offering an RMT study course, one through AHDI, if there are enough interested, I just don't want to throw the money away on an exam if it is really irrelevant, but I think I will inquire about it and consider taking the RMT if for no other reason than to say I did it! However, I will admit I would love to go to Andrews or M-TEC and expand my horizons, but that won't happen for a bit as I just can't afford it (or more debt right now), so that has to wait a bit.

I plan (I am a new MT) on taking the RMT, not only for credentialling, but also to keep my skills sharp and see just how much I do know. For those of you who have been an MT for many year, I can see why you would not think the need to take it is necessary. However, I do believe the time will come when MTs will need a credential. I do not think it is a bad idea either. It would be more challenging for those of us who are "green" so to speak, but should not be any problem for those of you who have so much experience. As for any of the schools mentioned above, they each do a fantastic job preparing one to meet the MT world. I graduated from M-TEC and had one of the toughest instructors possible. I do believe the school name had something to do with my getting hired, even before I took my final exam.
