Hello, I am very new to this business. I was just wondering if there was a web site for "sounds like". I was completing an evaluation test for MedQuist and one of the drugs listed sounded like "foslo" or "fozlo". It took me forever to come up with PhosLo. Is there a site where you could just type in what the drug, or misunderstood word sounds like, and it would come up with suggestions? Thanks for any help with this.

You could try the Word Board here, but what would be most helpful is if you had an excellent understanding of the different combinations of letters that can produce the different sounds in English. Remember the word puzzle about the pronunciation of "photi"? The answer is "fish." The F sound comes from PH as in phone. The short I sound comes from O as in women. The SH sound comes from TI as in nation. Voila, photi is fish!

I should note that asking test questions is not allowed on this Word board. ;) However, rxlist.com offers a decent sounds-like search, if the test you are taking allows references to be used.

If you would like to go ahead and make the investment in the new Pharmaceutical Word Book CD, I have found that the "sounds like" search on that is wonderful!

Wow, thanks to everyone for the great advice. Just a note, I had already completed the test. Just waiting for my results.

For drug s/l you can go here:
Drugs.Com Phonetic Search
If you put in fozlo, it would, indeed, give you PhosLo as one of your choices.

I guess you didn't see the note pinned to the top of the forums about NOT posting test questions.

To Nightbird...Thank you so much for the link to Drugs.com. That is exactly what is needed by a new MT. To Annie, I do apologize. Of course you are correct to remind me to review the topic of not posting test questions. I had read that some time ago and it completely slipped my mind. It's irrelevant to say that the test I completed recommended using all and any reference material available. I'm sure that most companies do not allow this. Sorry, won't happen again!

Oh, that is a good site! Funny I couldn't find a way to access it from drugs.com itself, only through your link. Thank you!

Part of the reasoning, too, is that companies may not change their tests frequently. ;)

YW Ebit and Ali.
Ali - Many companies DO let you use references to test, but just not asking someone else the question. Many more references for you on the Recommended Resources Forum.
Ebit - The way to get to it from the home page is to click on Advanced Search, but the link I posted is more direct.
I didn't take it that Ali was asking test questions - just looking for resources for future reference.
