Now, I don't know where to go. Any ideas out there. With the EMR, I know things are changing. I don't know if I should go more towards compliance, auditing or stick with physician coding or get more for inpatient coding. I really am trying to get to work from home. HELP!!!!!!!!

I want to make sure that I understand what you are saying. You are a coder in a hospital? clinic? doctor's office?
Are you credentialed? Do you have a CCS? CPC? What kind of coding education do you have, if you don't mind saying. Had you worked there a long time? Were your duties 100% coding? Were you working from home for a national employer that hires coders to work from home? This is such a good topic. I hope that some of those questions are not too personal. If they are, please ignore those questions and answer anything you are comfortable answering. The more information, the better. I love to learn!
Would you mind telling more about exactly how your job was taken away by EMR? I would love to know more. Thanks!!!

Hi Linda I was a certified coder for multi-speciality clinic. I have my CPC. I went to Indiana Business College in the '90's for a coding specialist program. I had been there for 2 1/2 years. Primarily I coded Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Urgent Care. Yes, 100% coding until EMR came a long. Then everthing was sent through a workque and we overlooked the physician's coding and corrected and educated them on how to code (how to do our job). Sorry, had to put that in there. It is a clinic in Lafayette, IN. No, I was not working from home yet. They are in the process of partnering with another entity and they are building a hospital together. The lucky coders that survive this transition will be eventually going home so we were told.
The EMR software this clinic adopted includes the doctors entering their own CPT and ICD-9 codes. Basically, they enter all of their coding while in the patients file through the EMR. Sorry, if this is a little confusing.
Also, yes. Please help me as I help you to learn. I really don't know what to do. I do see a lot of hospitals needing CCS's. In the process of this whole new merging of companies, I was trying to get more educated and had thought about finding a school or web company to learn and take CCS. Now, I guess I am glad I didn't pay for it yet, but still need help in deciding what is best.
Thanks Tamara

Wow, I wonder if they have gone through a period checking the coding choices of the doctors against what the coders would select to make sure they're getting everything? The codes change, and the medical procedures themselves do also change over time. Do the doctors really have time to keep up with all of that, I wonder? Perhaps they do if the practice is sufficiently narrow.

That has been our concern as well. I can't see how it is going to work. I had one instance with one of the docs about a nursing home patient being established and not new. He kindof got a little peaved when I told him he had seen the patient lately and that it acts the same as an office visit. I didn't know this he says. NO KIDDING!!!! that is what WE used to do, now it is up to you to know this all and to follow directions. Oh well, not my problem now. Have to wait and see how this works for them.
