I hope I am not posting this message in the incorrect place...I'm looking for guidence from some experienced MT's. I have 12+ years experience in insurance, including No-Fault, and just enrolled myself in a medical transcription course at a local business school. I am hoping to make the transition into a work-at-home MT. I am familiar with medical terminology and most of my day is spent reviewing medical bills, operative reports, initial/follow up exam reports and diagostic test results. I also handle provider inquiries and contact providers for treatment updates, etc. What is the likelihood of finding a job upon completion of the program? Should I opt for an on-line training program (CS/M-Tec)? How much income can a home based MT really make working full time?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Cindy

I have no answer for you but I do have a question. Would you be willing to enroll with Andrews or M-TEC instead if that is the advice you were given here?

Hi Cindy.

I worked as an inside claims adjuster for approximately 3 years before I started at Andrews. My experience included handling work comp as well as first and third party medical claims. I had earned the AIC designation and was working on my CPCU at the time.

After completing the Andrews course, I had a job offer on the first business day after submitting my test to the company. After about 6 months, I was earning an amount comparable to my previous position.

Take care,
Suzanne

Suxzanne - Thank you for that info. It's good to know that someone with a similar background has had some success at a MT, both in obtaining the job and meeting a financial goal!
Thanks again!

Amanda - I'm not sure how to answer that. I guess I was looking for an experienced MT that obtained their certificate from a local place, instead of a well-known on-line course, to tell me that they were offered a job right away, is making a decent income and that it really doesn't matter where you earn the certificate from, as long as you learn the material, are able to handle the research required and the committment needed to do a good job. OR, possibly someone to tell me - forget it, you will never get a job offer based on education from a local, unknown school to the MT world. Thanks for your response.

Well, I did go to a school that no one has heard of, got a fair-to-middling education and found employment in pretty short order, but that was back in 1990, and things have changed a lot since then. If I were preparing for MT today, I would get the best education that I possibly could.

Went to M-TEC. Got a great job right off the bat. Living in a low cost-of-living area and just bought my own house as a single mom. My ex watches the kids while I work.

CMB ~

Sometimes local facilities (hospitals most specifically) are familiar with local college MT courses and you may find an in-house job locally; however, the MTSO in Utah (example off the top of my head) where you apply to work at home isn't likely going to be familiar with your education and if it comes down to you or someone with an M-TEC or Andrews education, guess who most likely gets the chance to prove their skills? It's a gamble at best.

As well, one of the other grads may be started at a higher line rate and/or quickly earn a higher line rate. The M-TEC and Andrews grads I hired started at 7 cpl and within a year's time, both were up to 9 cpl. Another MT from a different school started at 6 cpl and after 2 years was at 7 cpl - her work was lacking and she required constant QA and quite frankly, I should have let her go, but I was too soft to do that.

Good luck with your decision!

Thanks everyone. I was just reading some comments about CS as well as M-Tec & Andrews. I think I agree, you get what you pay for and even though CS is cheaper and appears to be a shorter program, it doesn't seem worth the trouble. Even the program I just registered for at the local college - they are grandfathering me in on the medical terminology, anatomy and other stuff (based on my experience) and only requiring me to take the transcription course at $850 which is a 2 month class, but what good is it if I can't get a job after completion? Or, if I get a job and then sit here and rack my brain because I don't know something and have no resources to assit me?? You've all given some good advise. I've checked out the costs and what's included in the M-Tec and Andrews courses....looks like I will go that route.

Even if you do end up reviewing some material you already know, you will probably pick up some new terms and knowledge, and you will be in better shape for the work ahead. Let us know how it goes!

Good luck! The School of Hard Knocks is the best, but a degree/certification sure looks good on a resume! \:\)

One other thing: Learn the difference between "advise" and "advice."

Not trying to be nasty here; it's just one of my pet peeves.

<You've all given some good advise.>
