Questions for medical coding professionals...

Hello all! About a year ago, I made the difficult decision to quit the MT profession and go back to school for a college degree. I did some research and decided to enroll in the HIT program of a university that is accredited by AHIMA. I am currently on schedule to graduate in about 8 months and am beginning to stress about acquiring that first job.
For those of you who are currently working in the field of medical coding, I was wondering if you would be kind enough to take the time to answer a couple of quick questions related to this profession?
1. What did you find were the necessary qualifications, education requirements and/or other credentials for you to obtain your position with your current employer?
2. What is your work setting like, and what are your primary job responsibilities?
3. Should I supplement the coding classes that I will be taking at my university with additional material, or will those classes alone be sufficient? (I am interested in sitting for the CCS after I have successfully completed the exam to become an RHIT.)
Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to read and respond to this rather lengthy post! I very much appreciate it!

Dear Capri, I am an MT/Coder, so I have the best of both worlds. My employer prefers an RHIT, CCS, etc, but I was hired based on my work experience. I did my training through an adult education program about 12 years ago. I prefer transcription and I am not kidding, YOU WILL MISS IT! But, coding is interesting, depending on what you are doing, OPT, IP, etc. Your MT experience will help you greatly with your coding. Good luck

Hi,
I am sorry to ask a question on another person's thread. I am considering either MT or medical coding. May I ask why you prefer MT to coding? Thank you!
I am leaning towards Andrews for my education for either profession.
