Avatar step-by-step instructions

I was typing out some instructions for someone and thought as long as I had them all done, I'd post it here for anyone else who isn't sure how to go about posting an avatar. These instructions use the example of photobucket.com, but most of the image-hosting web sites should work similarly. First, make sure your avatar is somewhere on your computer where you can find it. I just have mine right on my desktop, but you may have it in My Documents or My Photos or wherever you keep your photos. Also, make sure it is no larger than 80 pixels x 80 pixels. Actually, it can be larger, but it will automatically get condensed to the proper size. So if it is not at least square to begin with, it will end up out of proportion. Also, make sure it has the .jpg, .gif, .png, or .bmp extension on it. These are the file types that photobucket will accept.
Then go to www.photobucket.com. Sign up for free, putting in a username, a password of your choice, and your e-mail address. They will immediately e-mail you a link. Go to your e-mail and click on the specified link. Then when you are brought back to the page where it says "Your account has been activated," click on the link right below that. You will come to a page where you have to enter your password. Then you will be on the page where you can upload your avatar. Just click on Browse..., which is right below "Add Picture." Find where you put your avatar on your computer. Choose it, and then click Submit. Then scroll down on the page. You should see your image with three boxes below it: URL, Tag, and Img. These are coded different ways for different purposes, but for MTChat, just copy the link next to URL. Then go to MTChat, click on My Home, and go down to where you edit personal information, e-mail, etc.. Most of the way down that page, click on the button next to "URL to your avatar," and paste the code you copied into that box. Then click Submit at the bottom of the page, and the next time you post, voila! it should appear.

Althea - did you upload your picture to the link aurora gave - or one of the sites I listed in my post further down below?
It looks like you're just trying to link it from your computer - which won't work.
Take your sunset jpg and upload it following the instructions above. Then come back here and post that link in the avatar spot in your profile.

Annie- I had it in Shutterfly and copied it from there and pasted it in the line below the URL. What am I doing wrong?

It looks to me like Shutterfly doesn't allow what they call "hot links" -- meaning - the image is there - but they don't want you linking to it from another site (i.e., this one).
Save the picture you want to use on to your own computer.
Then follow Aurora's instructions in this post - to the letter.
That should work just fine for you.
