HIPAA is the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act passed in 1996, also known as the Kennedy-Kassebaum Act. The purpose of HIPAA is to improve efficiency in the delivery of health care by creating standards for electronic data interchange and to protect the confidentiality and security of health information by creating and enforcing a set of standards to be utilized industry wide. The privacy rule compliance is required by 04/14/2003.
