This article is HUGE, but it discusses what is wrong with Windows XP and a lot that is wrong with Microsoft.

Enjoy!

I know everybody loves to hate MS, but there aren't a lot of options. It's nice to let people know what the issues are, but unless there is a constructive alternative offered, all we can do is read it and say "oh, okay."

One option is to use anything other than XP. That includes Win2000 or 98.

I was particularly interested to see the author suggest that users install a third-party firewall (like Zone Alarm, not the one that comes with XP) and watch how many times XP tries to "phone home" to MS with information. I thought it was very odd that he said the networking features cease to function if you don't let XP do this.

You should really take the time to read the article and investigate some of the links/supplementary reading. At least that will make you aware of the issues, even if you subsequently decide that XP works for me with no problems.

I had so many problems with XP. It seems I couldn't do anything without being instructed to connect to MS for some kind of patch or upgrade for every program or piece of hardware I tried to install. Eventually, the whole thing just crashed one day (after less than 30 days of having it) and I wound up returning the computer for a full refund. Yah, MS was controlling my computer! Since then, I've built my own and use Windows 2000 and all is going quite well. There are other options.

Thanks, Mike, for the interesting, albeit, scary read.

The first thing I did was disable most of XP's features that connected them to me. Here is a little program I used: http://www.webattack.com/get/xpantispy.shtml

It is free. I am not that computer saavy, which is what MS is relying on to sneak in their connections to control the consumers with their products.

I will definitely read that article though. Thanks Mike.

I may be invaded still in some ways I don't know about, but this makes me feel better.
Zone Alarm I love, blip, blip, blip.

Hello everyone!!!
I was reading the post about WindowsXP. I also, have a Gateway and I have WindowsXP. I have been having a problem with something and was wondering if I could get some advice. I have been trying to take tests for online companies. I download the dictation onto either express scribe, media player, ect. When I go to type the dictation on Microsoft Word I can't get both on the same screen. You know, so I can control the volume, speed, ect. Is this because I don't have a wave pedal. I will be honest, I have not purchased a transcribing machine because I want to make sure I get a job first. I know, it sounds silly. But if anyone can give me any input if this is way I can't do them both on the same screen I would appreciate sooo much!!!

Windows media player is not designed for transcription. The only way to get it and something else both visible on screen at the same time is to tile your windows. Otherwise the active window will always be on top.

Express Scribe has an Option under Settings, Other to keep it floating on top at all times. It also can be set for keyboard control through system wide hotkeys. I would recommend changing the default settings from the function keys to the number pad with number lock on. Those keys are generally not used for necessary functions in other programs like word processors.

It isn't absolutely necessary to spend money for transcription equipment yet. It is necessary to read the help files for the free transcription program you've got.

Check your Webattack downloads before installing them, jj3. The first (and last) download I ever got from that site came with its own trojan included in the package. I found a clean version of the program elsewhere - it was just the Webattack download that had the "bonus".

Sorry this is so late. Just saw your post tonight.

I have successfully used ExpressScribe (similar to other online nationals) for my online testing with Scribes Data. The trick is to type in their ExpressScribe or "whatever" window. There is an interim step wherein you "pull in the .wav files" - explained in the instructions, highlight the one you want to open (I had three or four) and listen to. As you begin typing, you will see the text you type in the ExpressScribe typing window. You never need to open Word, you need only plug your earphones into your speakers or back of your computer. No pedal or transcription unit is needed. After you pull their .wav files into the ExpressScribe editor, and you start transcribing and it will appear in its own text editor window. As you type, you can then erase, insert, typeover, cut (control+X) and paste(control+v), copy (control+c) as in any other text editing program.

If you first print out the instructions from the Nationals before you start typing, and study them, you will see that you don't need to use Word at all and the "F" function keys can adjust the speed of the dictation. Not sure which did what (F9, F10, F11 or F12), but it will tell you in the instructions that come with the download. In addition, there is a 1-800 tel. no. that will connect you with a tech rep.

It seems complicated at first, but just allow yourself time to get the directions down pat before you begin. And if you have them printed, you don't need to go back and check on screen.

Good luck! Take your time and proofread before FTP'ing back -- they tell you how to do that as well.
