In the past two days I have received 4 e-mails with viruses attached and 6 e-mails from different people telling me I have already been sent a virus because I was in their address book. HUGE .

The 4 e-mails were the real deal - and courtesy of people who have to be either (1) stupid beyond belief or, (2) lazy beyond belief. If you do not have antivirus software on your computer, keep it updated, and actually USE it, GET OFF THE INTERNET. Really. Do the rest of us a HUGE favor. I don't understand how someone can be on the internet without it. It's just beyond me. Can't even cite the cost as a concern - because gosh darn it -- there is at least one excellent antivirus software available for FREE!!!! So - again - laziness or just plain stupidity ---- neither of which wash.

The 6 e-mails were a hoax. Same e-mail from 6 different people.

If you're not sure what you're reading is real or not - please - before you send it along to everyone in your address book - take a few minutes to investigate. I understand the initial knee-jerk "Oh no!! I've sent everyone a virus!!" reaction - but a few minutes of your time at that point isn't going to make that much of a difference - and ultimately you end up saving yourself - and many others even more time - and aggravation.

To top. This way Annie knows that at least one person did "please read."

There's always some doubt when messages like this are allowed to scroll off the first page without some kind of acknowledgement.

I read it and I agree. We have Norton antivirus (2001) and we REGULARLY update. And, just to be extra safe, I also downloaded and installed the one from grisoft.com today.

Kelly,
Be careful. Sometimes 2 antivirus programs will cause each other to fail or cause other problems with the computer. Please re-read your information on the "bought" one or contact their tech support.

I had this happen and deleted all virus programs other than Norton. (one came with the computer and I didn't even know it was there).

Thank you Annie for reminding everyone. I too have had about 6 of the hoax ones in the last week or so - Mostly passed on by computer "newbies."

Thank you, Nancy -- another friend told me about that, and I'm definitely going to look into it. I appreciate the heads-up!

this is just slightly off topic, but still related to the virus hoax and need to keep ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE UPDATED!!

I bought 2 kids meals from BURGER KING today and they are offering a CD Rom of the x-Men - some video or something. Anyway, the CD had a PWSteal.Trojan virus attached to it. Can you believe it? From BURKER KING! Thank goodness I read this message a few days ago and just updated my Norton antivirus. THANKS ANNIE! So, I put in the second CD and guess what! That one had the virus too.

DON'T LOAD ANY CD FROM BURKER KING AS THEY MIGHT HAVE A VIRUS.....

I used Norton Antivirus and then McAfee.

An anti-virus company I like now is Computer Associates, Inc. I subscribed to the "eTrust EZ Armor" program and received antivirus, firewall, and "deskshield" protection for a package price of $49.95; annual renewal of the package is $19.95. Program updates download and install without first requiring me to log onto a Web page or enter a password; the updates are directly from the Web. Plus, I receive an email telling me an update is available, almost daily. http://my-etrust.com/?

Or,
eTrust EZ Armor 60-day trial version

"Trial version of eTrust EZ Armor FREE for 60 days: Comprehensive suite of personal security solutions including eTrust EZ Antivirus, eTrust EZ Firewall, and eTrust EZ Deskshield - 60-day Trial."

Thanks Annie ---

I have Norton Antivirus - and updated it last night ($19/20 for a year). I read what you wrote and realized that I spend "a lot of time on the Internet" and believe me, I don't want any virus problems that I can avoid.

I am no expert on "viruses or virus programs," but I feel better knowing that I have done what I can.

You know - everyone thinks "it won't happen to me," but I have a girlfriend whose computer totally collapsed a few weeks ago. She opened an Email and "down she went." She had to take her hard drive in to a computer service center and "hoped for the best." She was able to retrieve most of her data --but did lose some. I thought then, "I don't want to go there." You were a good reminder.

Thanks!!!!!!!!

Goldystar, my kids have that same CD and I am throwing it out right now! Thankfully, I told my son that I did not think it would work in our computer because it was smaller than a standard CD ?? Good thing or else he would have been right on here trying it out. Now it is going to "disappear." Someone should tell Burger King. I use Norton AntiVirus and it has saved my butt a few times. Definitely worthwhile!

I read this in my newspaper this morning, datelined Washington, from the Associated Press.
"Hackers Take Aim at Home Computers Computer hackers, once satisfied to test their skills on large companies, are turning their sights on home computers that are faster, more powerful and less secure than ever before. The hackers can steal your identity, destroy your data or use your computer to launch attacks on Web sites or your friends......Viruses and worms - which are viruses that don't need human intervention to multiply - make up a large part of the new threats to home computers. In the past year, users' computers have been infected with malicious programs...spread through e-mail or surfing......Home users need to routinely update their antivirus and Internet firewall software against the latest threats and check for software fixes that software makers provide for free." Pretty scary stuff! We have ZoneAlarm for firewall security as well as Norton 2002 which we installed last November.
