HELP...for the past two months the tape quality for one of my big accounts has gotten progressively worse. It fades in and out and is sometimes so inaudible that it sounds as if they are in an echo chamber. Yes, I have cleaned the heads and I have demagnitized my transcriber....Interestingly, for this account, about 5 out of every 10 tapes is this quality. The other 5 have perfectly fine quality. I have another small account and I have NEVER had a problem with tape quality. They are beginning to think I'm nuts. Can anyone shed some light on my problem? Thanks.

Fades in and out, eh? I have an intermittent problem myself with those kinds of tapes. If I hit the foot pedal down to play, I will hear the first two to three words really clearly and then the treble disappears. It then sounds as if they are talking through a tunnel. If I bring the foot pedal up and back down again, I can hear again for another two to three words. This will go on for the whole tape.

I've always assumed that those tapes need to be replaced. I could be wrong. Find out if the same doctors are using the same tapes; i.e., does Dr. Whatever's tape always have that problem? Do they exchange tapes around, and the problem seems to leap from doctor to doctor? I would somehow mark those tapes and keep track of them for a bit.

I have had regular music cassette tapes do the same thing, and it seems as if the treble has been completely stripped from the tape itself.

TeaJay, My tapes do exactly the same thing...once you take your foot off the pedal and depress it again, you can hear...Unfortunately because of this it takes an extremely long time to transcribe the tapes because you have to keep doing this throughout the entire tape. Some tapes are simply inaudible...I'll guess I will flag these particular tapes and ask them not to use them anymore!!! They should get a kick out of that because they will have a fit if they have to buy some new tapes!!!! I've never seen anything like this!!!

If they do not want to replace the tapes, my advice would be to buy them new ones and write off the expense. I would rather go ahead and shell out some $$ now and write it off later than suffer through those inaudible tapes!

I had the exact same problem with a couple of my transcription machines. One of them required having the head replaced. The other only needed a good cleaning by the service people (my own alcohol wiping didn't do the trick). I knew it was the machine because I tried the tapes in several different machines. I agree with TeaJay, if you think it's the tapes, just buy them new ones -- they love that.

I have had the same problem and it was the transcriber and not the tapes. Repairman adjusted heads on transcriber and told me that some recorders were not adjusted to the transcriber. He showed me how to use a tiny screwdriver to adjust heads for certain tapes when need be.

Thank you to all who helped me with this problem. Special thanks to "Smith". I just had my husband stick a small screw driver like instrument into where the heads of my transcriber are....and like magic, all my tapes are sounding just fine now!!! I'm so glad I came by this site today.

Colleen - you think your hubby can drop by and do the same for my transcriber?

Good to know for later on. It's just so hard to tell sometimes. The tapes I had the problems with were the oldest ones, and I haven't had any problems in a really long time.

TeaJay,

You can borrow my husband....so long as you live in NY (Westchester)!!! I would have never guessed it was the machine because of it being an intermittent problem and it ONLY happening with tapes from one account!!! GO FIGURE.

You seem to have your problem fixed! I had a problem with the tapes from one of my docs being inaudible throughout the tape even when I turned the volume all the way up and adjusted tone, etc. I do work for three others in a separate practice and their tapes were fine. Finally, the one doc surpised me one morning on tape by saying, "Okay, we're going to try this new recorder". The quality has been perfect since, so I assume the problem wasn't on my end. Just something to keep in mind! Contrary to common belief, it's not always the transcriptionist's fault!
