I know this is probably getting old to those of you who have helped so many, but was hoping someone would indulge me. I have the chance to pick up some extra work. The lady is looking into internet voice file transfer. I don't understand how this works or how much it costs. Can anyone elighten me?

I really think this option may be too costly, so am trying to think of alternative solutions to enable me to access the work. She receives dictation on standard cassette; I only have mini-cassette transcriber. She lives about 40 minutes away and I would prefer not to pick up tapes anyway.

I do have a digital dictation system, but without the doctor actually calling into it, I'm not sure how to re-record or is this possible? Any info appreciated. This lady transcribes a range of specialties and I would just love the experience. Thanks so much for everything you have to offer....(sometimes I'm just too ignorant to be true....)

Well Spellchick, you are not ignorant!! You are one of the most helpful people I have "met".
I'm not sure I will be of much help, but we are looking into the voice transfer over the internet. We are looking at Dictaphone. I don't know a whole lot about it yet, but I think it is pretty spendy. Maybe someone else has ideas about re-record. My boss is out of town. If you don't get the info you need from someone else in the meantime, I will certainly ask him when he returns. Good luck! and stop saying those naughty things about yourself!! Vickie

I'm not sure, but the transfer file is probably a *.wav file. Perhaps all you would need to get is a foot pedal (with its software) for the computer, and headset that will plug into your computer (in the jack where the speaker plug usually goes). You might check some of the sites (listed here) that deal with voice systems. I believe you do need a pretty good sound card with that set up. Good luck

Hi Spellchick,

Try visiting The Programmers Consortium. They are the developers of VoiceWare and WavPedal. WavPedal is a standalone device for controlling transcription of wave files and is relatively inexpensive.

VoiceWare, I believe, is the system at the other end that allows MDs to dictate into the system and makes the wave files.

From what I've read, there are multiple types of configurations and products that range from relatively inexpensive to full servers and internet interfaces which get more expensive. It probably wouldn't hurt to give them a call or E-mail them for more information.

keyword, qwerty-pie, thanks so much for the info!

Arleen, thanks a bunch! I visited the site and have e-mailed with my questions. Sounds like this may be an option after all....thanks again.

By the way, how was Ally Monday night? (of course, I didn't get to watch it )

I'm also looking into ways to avoid picking up tapes, etc. so I've been interested in your questions and the responses. The Voiceware setup sounds pretty good but I'm not sure I can get the doc's staff to take the time to set this up daily. They are too used to me just picking up the tapes and bringing back the finished product! I was looking at www.mtuniverse.com/rerecord.html and wondered if the rerecord suggestions might help you if there was a way for your doc's staff to "play" the standard cassette over the phone line for you to record instead of your having to call into a system as they describe. Just a thought! By the way, several years ago I found literally hundreds of standard size transcribers at a government salvage business. The government agency had converted over to mini-cassettes and sold the whole lot of standard machines. They were selling them for $25.00 each but I didn't have a need for a standard machine.

rtharpe, thanks so much! I will definitely check out the link. Darn, wish I'd been around when you found those machines.....what a steal! I have been trying to determine courier costs today to see just how much I would have to spend on that......or if she would help me out with it. I guess that would be her ticket to pick up....eh? Thanks again, much appreciated!

Spellchick,

I see you live in North Alabama and I live in North Florida. If you can't work anything else out, e-mail me and I'll make a call to see if any of the standard size machines are still available. Cost of shipping shouldn't be too bad.

rtharpe, much appreciated! I'll let you know. I haven't spoken with her about all of the info I've been introduced to, but should be getting in touch this weekend.

Thanks so much again, that is really just too nice! Have a great weekend.

Spellchick,

I got my Sony microcassette (new) through the eBAY.com auction for only $85, with re-record. I noticed that there is a standard Dictaphone 2880 being auctioned now ... current bid on it $51.50. So far, I've had excellent results buying used equipment on that site ... (however, the Dictaphone 2880 I purchased I have sent back and the seller has refunded my money - he was really great about it - it died after 48 hours). The only Dictaphone repair person I could find wanted $90 to repair it, and also stated "get rid of it" because it has little 'rubber wheels' that go bad frequently. so ... my comments on Dictaphone. In any event, you might try the site for a good buy on used equipment. Just make sure prior to bidding, you check out the seller, email him, and make sure you have an understanding on return/money back situation. Good luck.
