Dr. is saying "the hospital will probably want him to have a D-dimer study." The patient has unilateral edema and the doctor has ordered a doppler venous study. Then, he says the above sentence. Any ideas?

PTS,

I transcribed for a rheumatologist who used that term, so I know the term is correct. Unfortunately, I can't find where I wrote it down, so I'm not sure about the hyphenation/capitalization. I'll keep looking though.

Yes, D-Dimer. Check out: http://www.beckmancoulter.com/products/instrument/hemostasis/splash_pages/ddime r/references.asp

....but, d-dimer, according to Stedman's Electronic Medical Dictionary (SEMD):

quote:

d-dimer
A covalently cross-linked degradation product released from the cross-linked fibrin polymer during plasmin-mediated fibrinolysis; laboratory measurements of this product made using latex bead or ELISA assays can be used to identify the presence of fibrinolysis.
quote:

For me, I'd go with the latter, d-dimer.

Thanks, Jake.

A Google search finds D-dimer, D-Dimer, and D-DIMER -- so make sure the site is reliable, and be sure to verify what you find. PTS, I'm guessing I have it written down at work, but I'm not there right at the moment.

LOL! Jake, I think we're posting simultaneously!

For what it's worth, I have two path & lab word books, Stedman's and Sloane & Dusseau. Both list it as D-dimer.
