Good evening all. I need a little help here. I have now seen this written two different ways. Anyone know which is the correct way to write this?

Tendonitis or Tendinitis

Any help and documentation would be great. I have looked it up in Stedman's and it says that tendinitis is the pleural form of tendonitis. Can someone help me understand when to use which one or is one correct all of the time?

Thanks

Carlajo,

I can't document where you can find when to use one or the other...I just remember back in MT school (a few moons ago) my teacher telling us that "tendinitis" is the preferred spelling although either would be okay. Sorry I can't help out with documenting this, though.

And thanks for the Filipino response...I guess your hubby should know, right??

Hello

I would type tendinitis; it is the correct spelling for tendonitis per Dorland's Medical Dictionary.

This was discussed here - but I cannot seem to find the original thread.

Anyways ---- Vera Pyle has

quote:

tendinitis -- not tendonitis

The preferred spelling is tendinitis, but tendonitis is now also OK. The way you know which is the preferred is that the dictionary will say "see tendinitis" or just "tendinitis" to direct you to the preferred way and will list the preferred way without the additional direction. It's always good to know the preferred and that the secondary way is also semi-OK.

I agree with all of the above.

Tendinitis is preferred.
But tendonitis has become accepted.

I always have to laugh a little bit about this word because I am sure that it has been misspelled so often ("tendonitis" instead of "tendinitis") that everyone is just giving up ----- and letting "tendonitis" have its way.

This is the way the English language changes.
If enough people use a word for a long enough period of time ---it generally finally becomes acceptable.

And -- there have been many many posts about this word on this board before.....

Doesn't mean we have to like it or use it, though. Speaking of such, have you noticed how much "lay" is being misused on radio/TV these days? I keep hearing a mattress ad, by a local radio "personality," an educated man who normally speaks well, and he keeps saying something like "you lay on it and it feels so good. . ." Grates my teeth every time.
