Do these words mean the same thing or are they two different things. Can you give an example of how they are properly used? Thank you for your help!

Tangee:

Stedman's Cardiology lists both venous stasis and venostasis, but from what I can find, they both mean exactly the same thing! I don't know which is the more preferred. I'll have to check (with my QA for their opinion) and get back to you on that tomorrow.

My Taber's defines venostasis as:

quote:
The trapping of blood in an extremity by compression of veins, a method sometimes employed for reducing the amount of blood being returned to the heart.

Maybe venostasis would refer to a technique and venous stasis would refer to an event? As in venous stasis ulcer? But in searching I find venostasis ulcers listed as well, so I'm just guessing here.

Good question! I'll try to post again tomorrow after I get an answer.

Docs I work for have always used venostasis.

Tangee,

I think that this is one of these words that is finally making it into print and thus accepted as a word.

Venous stasis is always going to be accepted because the meaning is clear and two both can stand alone. There is probably a rule about why it should be confirmed, but MTs and doctors over the years have heard it as venostasis and thus it make its way into the jargon and now into books.

It all depends on whether you adhere to the purist attitude on your work or not. Neuroforamina will never be one work in my mind and neither will venous stasis, but others will disagree.
