Anonymous Unregistered

Good morning! If anyone out there is working on Saturday (I'm such the procrastinator!), could you please tell me why these docs keep saying "cisplatinum" when I can only find "cisplatin?" Are these two words interchangeable, is there a hyphen between "cis" and "platinum," or do they really mean cisplatin? Thanks in advance for any enlightenment on the subject...

I'm finding both terms in my Dorland's Medical Speller.

cis-platinum (they show the "cis" italicized and the word is hyphenated)
and
cisplatin

Dorland's Medical Dictionary only has a definition for "cisplatin," though. I'd bet they're two different things.

Thanks for the clarification! I don't own a Dorland's -- everything I have is Stedman's.

I did a search for "cisplatin cisplatinum" with http://google.com/ and this is one of the sites I found.

quote:
One of the most potent and widely used anticancer drugs in use today, cisplatin is a
surprisingly simple and unique compound ‡. It is unusual among modern pharmaceuticals in that it is an inorganic compound, possessing a metallic element whereas most drugs are purely organic such as paclitaxel (better known by its commercial name as taxol). Having been shown to possess antitumour activity since 1970, and used clinically for almost twenty years, cisplatin has picked up many names along the way. Cisplatin can and is, therefore referred to as any of the following synonyms.....

cis-platinum is listed as one synonym. For the complete list, please go to http://www.ch.ic.ac.uk/local/projects/s_liu/Html/Cisplatin.html

I'm working right along with ya! Saturday has lost it's "weekend" meaning for me too.

Anyway, according to my 2000 Drake pharmaceutical book:

cis-platinum (cis italics) is the old form of what is now called cisplatin.
Both are antineoplastics used in the treatment of carcinoma.

Have a great day!

thanks for the FURTHER clarification, Renee and typingmom (cute name!) I had a feeling this was the case as some of the chemotherapy protocols including cis-platinimum were listed in my book under cisplatin. I don't think any of my oncology docs say cisplatin, though.

well, i'm off to the mall for some Christmas shopping -- guess my whole life is one big procrastination after another!!!
