Doc says, "The culture taken at surgery was consistent with "H-flu". How is this written. H.flu, h.flu, H-flu, h-flu???
Anyone know? Thanks in advance.

BOS says it is okay on the second reference to abbreviate the genus name, but never abbreviate the species name. Their example is: H. influenzae.

They don't say this specifically, but I get the impression they recommend spelling out the genus name on the first mention, so that would be Haemophilus influenzae.

I don't normally work with terms like this, so I would wait to hear what others say.

H. flu is short-speak or doc-speak for Haemophilus influenzae per Stedman's Pathology & Lab Medicine Words and Saunders Word Book in Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, also Mosby's Medical Dictionary which gives a full definition. You can also check whatever medical dictionary you are using for a full definition. I would transcribe it H. influenzae (note spelling of influenzae).

I also agree with Stargazer that you can spell it out in full the first time it is mentioned in the report, then as H. influenzae thereafter.
