It is plain films per MPI. I don't know why though. Maybe someone else knows.

Hi, I'm thinking the doc means plain as opposed to plane which would refer to a type of angle the x-ray was taken at such as medial oblique.

thanks for your help. I'm still not sure which spelling is correct, though. I had typed it "plain" and I'm going to leave it that way. But I will continue to check.

thanks again!

Plain films as opposed to more complicated procedures such as CT, MRI, NucMed, etc. Remember, plain old films, not fancy films.

Plain films is correct, plain as opposed to fluoroscopy, tomography, etc. I am trying to think of other types of films that would have been available at the time that the term "plain" film was coined.

Plane are direction in which the rays would travel, but I cannot think of a single instance where you could talk about plane films.

Hope that helps.

While I see everyone gave good alternatives to plain, the way I remember is that it is plain films as opposed to those with contrast. There really isn't an incident where you would use plane in regards to an x-ray, unless they were specifically referring to plane meaning a flat or level surface (like maybe a cross-section of something like in a CAT scan or MRI).

Just had to put my 0.02 in! Hope this helps you, too!

Just my 2 cents, too.

It is plain, meaning no contrast. Such as a "plain film of the abdomen", a film with no barium or gastrografin contrast.

One place where you might see "plane" is biplanar films, such as a biplanar angiogram. Images are made in two planes: From one side to the other (a lateral) and from front to back (AP), or back to front (PA), depending on what they want imaged. This gives a look at the structure from two perspectives. I believe a biplanar angiogram is imaged during one contrast injection (but I've been wrong before )

Definitely plain; as in no contrast, nothing fancy.
