I was at work today and I am new at MT. The young lady I work with said Hifercated was the way she spelled this word but I could not find it anywhere. The term was used to describe how a hole is put into a nail to relieve pressure on a nail with a bad contusion. Thank you for any help.
Madame.

There is a "hyfrecator" listed in my surgical word book. No definition as to what this instrument is used for. Hope this helps.

The nail hematoma was "trephinated", which is the creation of a hole to release the pressure under the nail. I don't know where this gal got "hifercated" from. Did you actually hear a doctor say this? What did it sound like to you?

Blondie - you could be on to something there. I think the instrument you're describing is a cautery device. I'll check!

Okay, I'm back! A hyfrecator is a device that can be used to burn a hole (as in a nail), or to cauterize. Did a Google search and found articles describing it's use.

So I guess the nail was "hyfrecated"!! New Word, Yippee!!

Dear Madame,

You did the right thing by coming to MTDesk to document this term. As a new MT, my advice to you would be to "beware of people giving advice without being able to provide documentation". And documentation from more than one source is even better.

Hyfrecators are used on skin lesions and you will find them in many dermatologists' offices, plus surgeons and some family practice offices. They are used on warts and skin tags in addition to nails.

Toni - you forgot hyfrectized and hyfrectization.

...Just kidding! But on the other hand, it's inevitable. Somebody's gonna' say it, and I want to be prepared!

I am always amazed at how much I learn from these postings. I've been in the same hospital for so long, hearing the same things over and over again, that I can do it in my sleep. MTDesk gives me the opportunity to learn terminology outside my little cocoon, and I truly appreciate it.
