Just so you know, in case you have an account that likes things with subscript, etc., it is traditionally written CoQ10 with the 10 being subscript. You'll probably find it typed different ways too, including Co-Q10.

I am interested in Talon's answer that the 10 is subscript. Drake and Drake Pharmaceutical Word Book does not show it as subscript. The show CoQ10 (see coenzyme Q10). Is it really supposed to be subscript? Thanks for any help. Joyce

I did a search of MT desk for coenzyme Q10 and it took me to the Alternative Medicine site and there it is subscript. However, a search with Google and PubMed do not show it as subscript and Vera Pyle's Current Medical Terminology does not show it as subscript. Anybody have anything definitive? TIA Joyce

I believe to subscript or not to subscript is a matter of typesetting. On the web, you'll find many sources that do not subscript B12 etc. Also, if you go to Drugstore.com and look up Coq10, you will see the bottles; one manufacturer shows it on the bottle as CoQ10, another CoQ10. If you subscript vitamins, I'd subscript this. From Dorlands (looked up ubiquinone> quote:
ubiquinone a quinon derivative with a variable length side chain of isoprene units; ...Abbreviated Q or Q10. Formerly called coenzyme Q.
Because coenzyme is NOT hyphenated, I would never put Co-Q; also, since you wouldn't put B-12 for the vitamin, I would not put CoQ-10 either). CoQ10. Since CoQ10 is shown as product names, it would not be incorrect to transcribe it as such. If you are typing the more generic form coenzyme Q10, I would always subscript it (if you subscript all other instances of subscripts like O2 etc.

Not answer, just opinion: I doubt we'll find anything definitive on the 'proper' way this should be written -- it's shown in various ways (with/without hyphen, with/without subscript number) on product packaging and in printed and web-based references. I've seen numerous references to "coenzyme Q10 (vitamin Q10)," so if one is looking for guidance on how to transcribe, perhaps the AAMT BOS will serve: l/c "vitamin, capitalize the letter designation, and use arabic numerals (in subscript form if available). Do not use a hyphen or space between letter and numeral. [Example:] vitamin B12 or vitamin B12." (I wish I had waited for Arleen ) [This message has been edited by Toni (edited September 20, 1999).]

Thanks so much Arleen and Toni. You always have great answers!! I appreciate the time you took to answer this and since I do subscript vitamins I will subscript this coenzyme. Thanks again. Joyce

We try our best. Don't have all the answers. I always give a big long sigh when Toni agrees. You should see some of the discussions we go through over the weekend when trying to figure out some of the weekly updates; 99 percent of the time, Toni and I agree, which is comforting. It's that 1% that can go into weeks of discussions between Toni and I and with Barbara (our outside proofreader). Sometimes there is no definitive answer on these. It's at those times, I recommend to keep consistent with how you usually handle similar situations. Also, when we do have those 1% discussion, Toni's usually right!
