I am an MT and I want to take coding/billing courses. I have narrowed it down to Career Step or Meditech because they work with sallie mae and I can get a loan to pay for the classes. Any info or feedback would be appreciated.
Please email me directly as I don't come to the boards often.
Thanks,
Julie Martin

I am in the process of applying for a Sallie Mae Loan through Career Step. I graduated from their Medical Transcription online course and loved it! I thought I received an excellent foundation for medical transcription.

I look forward to taking their online Medical Coding Course beginning in December while I work full time as an MT.

Mercy. As in MT courses, the cost and financing available have NO bearing on whether a course is worth investing your time and money in. As coding is even more difficult to break into than MT, it makes no sense to take a no-name course that employers aren't going to respect or recognize. You need a course with either AHIMA or Andrews - and I've seen an awful lot of graduates of the Andrews course who are able to pass all the important certification tests immediately upon graduation.

Of course, if you simply like to take classes as a hobby, knock yourself out.

It's also possible now to enroll with The Andrews School on Sallie Mae loans.

I am well aware of the difficulty in breaking into Medical Coding and Career Step is a well-known name in the arena of online courses.

Career Step is recognized and respected in the medical profession. They have been around for over 15 years.

At this stage in my life I am very serious about taking switching to Medical Coding and not looking to "take classes as a hobby."

Well, you're entitled to your opinion, of course. Do they have real instructors for the coding course, or just that "automatic comparer" like they have for the MT course? Last I heard the whole coding "program" was just one guy named Randy or something, who occasionally answers questions on the message board. I also heard that so far nobody who has finished the CS program has obtained an at-home job doing coding. At-home jobs in that field are hard to find, and I would think you'd want the best education possible.

I know Meditech (not M-TEC) has a very inferior MT course but don't know anything about their coding course.
