Dear friends: I swear I'm the dumbest person on here, but what does "acute care" actually mean? Thanx,

acute care = hospital work An acute care transcriptionist can do: The basic 4 (discharge summaries, operative reports, consultations, H&Ps) and then some (Echocardiograms, pulmonary function tests, cardiac catheterizations, colonoscopies...) Work on a variety of different accounts. Transcribe a variety of accents and don't have a problem working with hundreds of different doctors.

...and lots of hospital noise in the background, even foreground---phones ringing, people yelling in pain, intercoms buzzing, floor waxers going, hospital equipment beeping, etc... [ 08-06-2003: Message edited by: Donna2 ]

Don't leave out the ER doctors who insist on dictating at the main desk right next to the emergency radio with EMS calls coming in, next to the main phone line, right under the PA speaker, with patients checking in with the ER Clerk, and next to the first ER bay with a screaming patient on the gurney. Sigh. Nancy

Janie- I know I always, always, always like people to know what they could be getting into. I so enjoy my work, with the hundreds of doctors, accents, floor waxers, screaming, etc., but it doesn't mean everyone would like it. (Actually, we can leave out the screamers and floor waxers...) D nna

Are the SUM tapes recognized as "acute care"? I'm still in school, and in order to complete the course I have to finish all 31 SUM tapes. Is that standard?

Damaris- If you have the complete set of SUM tapes HPI offers, it covers acute care with real dictators in real hospital settings. I don't know what course you are taking, but if someone is carefully evaluating your work and giving you consistent feedback, sounds good. D nna

Donna, I am being monitored. I'm in school M-F, for 4 hrs, and transcribe away. I'm on SUM tape 11, and like I said before in order to graduate I have to complete all 31 SUM tapes. The tapes vary in specialties. I have already heard the passing gas, children screeming, nurses and doctors chatting, muffling, and the occasional telephone ringing. Did I leave anything out? HAHA Honestly, how well do the SUM tapes prepare a newbie? Also, what are my chances in getting a job after my internship?

Damaris- I guess what I'm saying is, I don't remember how many tapes are in the complete set, but if 31 covers the entire set that HPI offers, then it sounds good, not forgetting my other comments about being evaluated closely. It is hard for me to know for sure if it will well train you, as I was trained on the SUM tapes plus AAMT General Surgery tapes, along with the close evaluation. It has also been a very long time since school, so it's hard for me to figure out what it would have been like without the AAMT tapes. I was well prepared to start on my own, though did choose to work for a small local place to gain speed and such. Sorry I can't be more precise! D nna

As a former instructor using the SUM tapes at our local community college and as a long-time mentor for newbies here, I think that you will have a very solid foundation to begin your career as an MT, especially as you had mentioned an internship. Frankly, nothing really could have prepared me for the ESL doctors and some of the things I have encountered in "real" situations. We are fairly "sheltered" in this neck of the woods. :-) Some things you just have to learn as you go along, and that is one of the beauties of MT work, in my opinion. Always learning something new. Just stick with it. ESL dictators that had me in tears just a year or so ago, I find now I can almost always (not always) understand now. Nancy
