Hi all,
I am Ru, I am currently an RN, working in Public Health, after a few years of hospital based work. I am looking at getting into MT for 2 reasons. 1. The pay in public health is abyssmal, and I could use a supplement, but more importantly for me, I would like to leave the clinical setting altogether. I have been looking online at various options, and so far MT seems to fit my personality the best. I would love to get your opinions and feedback about the feasability of this. Is it possible and/or evena good idea to work part time as an MT? (from home)

Thanks Y'all for your insight.

Hi Ru,
Yes it is very possible to go from nursing to MT. I am living proof. I spent over 30 years as an RN until an unfortunate accident put an end to my career. A very important thing to remember is that just because you are an RN, you cannot just "make the transition". Yes, you have medical knowledge-as an RN, and yes, it will help you with terms, however, you will need schooling if you wish to make it as an MT. Feel free to email me. I am always more than willing to help if I can.

Thanks granny. I am currently looking at the Andrews school. She specifically states the will be no leeway given for prior experience. I had to think about it a minute, but it did dawn on me that unless it is OB/GYN or telemetry (and that a few years out of date)I really don't remember all I learned way back in nursing school, LOL So it is a selling point for me. Any opinion?

Ru,

First of all, welcome to MT Chat/Desk!! It's nice "meeting" you!!

Andrews School is, in my opinion, one of the best at-home MT courses available. Linda is a very sweet person, and I am sure that she will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have!!

Good luck!!
Deborah

I found a school that offers a program just for RN's and that does not cut any corners either. It is the Tier II program at M-TEC. They are also one of the sponsors of this website, and I have heard a lot of nice things about them too. I have been doing a lot of researching, so I would be happy to answer questions if you have any others. The M-TEC website is http://www.mtecinc.com in case you need a link.

Ru,

I was an RN for many years before deciding on getting into MT. I had experience with many specialties. However, I was shocked at what I didn't know. I would say that your experience will help you a great deal, but it is still difficult. MT is so much more than medical terms. It is also ear training and grammar. Don't kid yourself into thinking you'll be able to just fly through a course. It took me longer than I thought, but I am happy that I did it because I found that I really enjoy it. I am just about ready to graduate from the Andrews School and couldn't be happier with my choice. It was an excellent course and they are very supportive. I feel well prepared to join the MT world. Best of luck in your endeavors!

Karen

Hi Ru:

I think most people on this board will agree that the top 2 schools for MT are Andrews and M-TEC.

Talk to Karen Perenic (I think I've spelled her name correctly--LOL) at M-TEC. She's an RN and is the one at M-TEC that is in charge of the nurses transitioning into medical transcription. I am not an RN, so never looked that closely into the Tier II program there, but it is designed especially for RNs. I believe the only difference between it and the Tier I program is they assume you already have enough A&P and Terminology training, but you have to complete everything else. And once in the program, if you discover you need the Tier I program (which covers everything!), it's always possible to switch from one program to another.

So give both Linda at Andrews and Karen at M-
TEC a call and discuss your situation with each of them. They are both great schools and the directors at each school are wonderful to talk to and very helpful.
